Job summary

Missouri Veterans Commission is seeking a part-time laborer to maintain cemeteries, buildings, equipment, and grounds, operating heavy machinery such as zero turn mowers, backhoes, and snow blades to support operations safely and efficiently.

The role requires physical ability, a valid Missouri driver's license, and the ability to perform landscaping, painting, minor repairs, and assist maintenance staff across the St. Louis Metro area.

Qualifications

  • One year of manual or semi-skilled work in building maintenance or related fields.
  • Ability to operate grounds equipment safely and effectively.
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks outdoors.
  • Must possess a valid Missouri driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance on equipment and grounds as directed.
  • Paint buildings and equipment and perform light construction tasks.
  • Maintain landscaping, mowing, trimming, and trash pickup.
  • Repair floors or walls as needed and assist in dispatching tasks.
  • Operate mowing equipment, backhoes, loaders, and other tools.
  • Assist in events setup, winter snow removal, and on-call emergencies.

Job description

As a part-time laborer at a Missouri Veterans Cemetery you will help provide maintenance and labor services to the cemeteries, buildings, equipment systems, and grounds as required for the organizations' operation in a safe, timely and most economical manner. This position also helps operate heavy machinery including zero turn mowers, trimmers, backhoe, snow blade and front loader.

Hourly Rate: $16.83

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge in the operation, maintenance, and safety practices of grounds maintenance tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, bend, reach, and climb a ladder
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and traverse over rugged terrain
Qualifications
  • One year of experience performing manual and semi-skilled work in building maintenance or construction, equipment maintenance or repair, heating or power plant operation and maintenance or in related work; and completion of the eighth school grade
Physical Requirements
  • Physical requirements and activities include: balancing, finger dexterity, pulling, pushing, standing, climbing, grasping, stooping, crouching, crawling, kneeling, squatting, reaching both outwards and overhead, lifting and moving materials (occasionally in difficult work positions), repetitive motions, frequent washing of hands, and general physical activities requiring a full range of mobility in upper and lower body.
  • Must be able to work with some physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, occasionally in confined spaces, on ladders and rooftops, and in adverse weather conditions
Job Description Summary

  • Perform preventative maintenance and monitoring activities on equipment as directed.
  • Assist higher level maintenance staff in performing more complex maintenance repairs and construction activities
  • Paint buildings and equipment
  • Outdoor maintenance which includes mowing, trimming, trash pickup, and work on landscaping projects
  • Repair or replace floor, wall tile or other wall coverings
  • Operate equipment including but not limited mowing equipment - zero turn mowers and trimmers; also backhoe, snow blade, spreader, front loader, chain saw, backpack blowers, and all other small grounds tools
  • Possess a valid Driver's License from Missouri or state of residence, preferably Class E to perform duties of driving state vehicles off the property for parts runs to various locations in the St. Louis Metro area
  • Perform landscaping projects including but not limited to chemical applications for fertilization and weed control. Duties also involve construction and maintenance of flower beds including design, selection, planting, and upkeep of flowers and bushes.
  • Sidewalk and roadway repair and sealing duties as needed
  • Preparation for outside events including erecting tents, running electrical cables, and moving of chairs and tables will occur during months of mild temperatures
  • Maintenance of patio furniture will include repair and paintings as well as sealing of wood benches
  • Snow removal
  • Limited concrete work
  • Welding and soldering may be required
  • Attend departmental meetings and training
  • Clean and organize work areas
  • Sign making and installation
  • May be on call for emergencies
  • Assist in disaster events
  • Care and maintenance of facility vehicles and equipment
  • Install decorations for holidays
  • Raise/lower flags and replace as needed
  • Work assignments will be made to wherever needed within the department and facility
  • Other duties as assigned
