Job summary

NYC Health + Hospitals Bellevue is seeking a skilled laboratory technologist with leadership abilities to supervise a laboratory unit and ensure high‑quality patient care. Qualifications

• Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by NYSED.
• Level III: one year of full‑time paid experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory or blood bank.
• Qualifying experience not limited to New York State; license/permits allow work in appropriate disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, train, assign work to, and evaluate performance of personnel in a laboratory unit performing routine and complex tests.
• Perform routine and complex clinical laboratory tests; record results and enter data.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment; perform quality control procedures.
• Participate in internal and external quality control and proficiency testing programs.
• Prepare media, reagents, and controls; ensure adequate supplies are available.
• Prepare reports and maintain charts and records on a regular basis.
• Oversee subordinate staff and provide on‑the‑job training as needed.
• Order and maintain laboratory supplies; contribute to policy development and procedure reviews.

Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position

• Under direction, with very broad latitude for independent judgment and decision making, supervise, train, assign work to, and evaluate the performance of personnel in a small laboratory or laboratory sub‑unit performing routine and complex clinical laboratory tests and analyses.
• Perform routine and complex clinical laboratory tests and procedures, enter raw data from instruments, record results, and maintain data and other records.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and perform quality control procedures.
• Participate in internal and external quality control and proficiency testing programs as required by regulatory agencies.
• Prepare packages, labels, standardize laboratory media, reagents, and controls to ensure the laboratory is adequately supplied.
• Prepare reports, make entries on charts, and maintain data on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis as required.
• May oversee, monitor, and/or review the work of subordinate personnel as required.
• Assist in on‑the‑job or classroom training of subordinates, new personnel, and other persons as required.
• May supervise subordinate employees and review and document work performance, taking corrective action when needed.
• Order and maintain adequate amounts of media, reagents, and other supplies.

Additional Responsibilities

• Maintain a program of quality control and participate in a program of quality assurance.
• Advise staff on appropriate methods and techniques.
• Oversee ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment; prepare, package, label, and standardize laboratory media and reagents; record results and data of prepared products.
• Prepare work orders for laboratory repairs.
• Assist in developing and revising laboratory policies and procedures.
• Conduct tests and/or other complex analyses.
• Design and maintain charts, logs, and other records.
• Testify in court or other proceedings as an expert witness.
• Prepare correspondence and narrative/statistical reports.
• Participate in or supervise the preparation, administration, and rating of laboratory proficiency test programs.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by NYSED.

Level III Requirement

• One (1) year of full‑time paid experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory or blood bank.

Special Notes

Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State. Candidates that are solely licensed or issued permits to practice as cytotechnologists or histotechnologists may only be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in a laboratory discipline/specialty appropriate to their license or permit. Candidates that are licensed or hold permits to practice as clinical laboratory technologists may be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in all laboratory disciplines/specialties.
