Job summary

Modine Manufacturing Company is seeking a Laboratory Technician (Instrumentation & Thermal Systems) to perform technical lab work involving instrumentation, electronic devices, and thermal testing systems.

You will support testing, calibration, and operation of chillers and refrigeration systems, ensuring accurate data collection and compliance with safety standards. Work involves low to high voltage environments and use of basic tools.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical/associate degree preferred in electrical, mechanical, or instrumentation technology.
  • Prior lab or test engineering experience is a plus; familiarity with HVAC or refrigeration is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of instrumentation, sensors, thermocouples, and related measurement tech.
  • Ability to work with low/medium/high voltage systems and use basic hand tools safely.
  • Experience with DAQ and data recording techniques; ability to interpret schematics.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and maintain laboratory instrumentation and testing equipment.
  • Work with electronic devices including sensors, thermocouples, flow meters, and other tools.
  • Operate and monitor chiller and refrigeration systems, including vapor-compression cycle equipment.
  • Conduct calibration procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance with specifications.
  • Use DAQ to collect, record, and interpret test data.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and diagnosing issues in mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems.
  • Follow SOPs, safety regulations, and lab protocols.
  • Collaborate with engineers and staff on experiments and development projects.
  • Ensure cleanliness, organization, and proper handling of lab equipment.

Position Description

The Laboratory Technician (Instrumentation & Thermal Systems) is responsible for performing technical laboratory work involving instrumentation, electronic devices, and thermal testing systems. This role supports testing, calibration, and operation of chillers and refrigeration systems, ensuring accurate data collection, proper equipment functionality, and compliance with safety and quality standards. The technician will work with a variety of electrical systems, including low, medium, and high voltage environments, using both basic and specialized tools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set up, operate, and maintain laboratory instrumentation and testing equipment
  • Work with electronic devices including sensors, thermocouples, flow meters, and other measurement tools
  • Operate and monitor chiller and refrigeration systems, including vapor-compression cycle equipment
  • Conduct calibration procedures on instruments to ensure accuracy and compliance with specifications
  • Use Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) to collect, record, and interpret test data
  • Assist in troubleshooting and diagnosing issues in mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems
  • Safely handle and operate electrical tools and equipment across low, medium, and high voltage applications
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety regulations, and laboratory protocols
  • Collaborate with engineers and technical staff to support experimental and development projects
  • Ensure cleanliness, organization, and proper handling of laboratory equipment and materials.
Required Education & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or associate degree in electrical, mechanical, or instrumentation technology preferred
  • Prior experience in a laboratory, test engineering, or technical maintenance environment is a plus
  • Familiarity with refrigeration, HVAC systems, or thermal testing laboratories is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of instrumentation principles and electronic devices
  • Familiarity with sensors, thermocouples, flow meters, and similar measurement technologies
  • Knowledge of vapor-compression refrigeration cycles and chiller systems
  • Experience with chiller operation and refrigeration system fundamentals
  • Ability to work with electrical systems at low, medium, and high voltage levels
  • Competence using basic hand tools and electrical tools safely
  • Experience with thermal testing procedures and laboratory environments
  • Understanding of Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) and data recording techniques
  • Knowledge of calibration methods and instrument verification
  • Ability to interpret technical schematics and system diagrams.
  • Ability to lift and handle test equipment and tools as needed
  • Willingness to work in environments involving electrical and mechanical systems
  • Strict adherence to safety practices when working with high-voltage equipment and refrigerants
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
