Job summary

Bureau Veritas in Texas is seeking Oil and Petroleum Laboratory Technicians to perform laboratory tests determining chemical and physical characteristics of materials, supporting quality control, process control, and product development.

You will operate instruments such as viscometers, GC, spectrophotometers, and densitometers, follow safety procedures, and participate as a team member. A GED with 1–3 years of related experience is typical; a bachelor’s degree may be preferred for some roles.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 1–3 years related experience; bachelor’s degree may be preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operate manuals, and write routine reports.
  • Strong math skills; basic algebra applicable to role.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all company safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Operate laboratory equipment such as viscometer, densitometer, spectrophotometer, GC, colorimeter.
  • Test samples related to oil and gas per industry methods.
  • Instruments used include GC, titrators, densitometers, ICP, AA.
  • Analyze SQC samples and compare results to limits.
  • Prepare chemical solutions.
  • Instrument calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • May work rotating schedule including weekends/holidays; on-call and overtime.

Job description

SUMMARY:

Oil and Petroleum Laboratory Technicians perform laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow all company safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and instruments such as viscometer, densitometer, spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, colorimeter, and other equipment.
  • Test samples related to oil and gas per industry or company methods. Examples of sample types may include gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, fuel oil and petrochemicals.
  • Instruments utilized for testing could include gas chromatograph, titrators, densitometers,
  • ICP, AA, and other instruments.
  • Follow all company quality procedures.
  • Analyze SQC samples and compare the results to known limits.
  • Prepare chemical solutions.
  • Recognize and investigate suspect test results.
  • Participating as a team player, understanding the success of the team is critical.
  • Instrument calibration, as required.
  • Instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, as required.
  • May work a rotating schedule including weekends and holidays and must be available to work on an on-call basis. Some overtime may be required.
  • Other duties assigned by management.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s Degree preferred for some technician and other laboratory roles.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to execute basic algebra as it applies to the role.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, AND REGISTRATIONS:

Valid driver’s license required.
