Hours per pay period: 80

Position Summary:

Performs all specimen collection by phlebotomy from the correct individual at in-house or off-site locations. Obtains other specimens when indicated, and instructs patients in collection procedures as necessary. May enter pathology specimens into computerized information systems and perform preparation and staining of cytology specimens. Works in all laboratory areas under supervision and has appropriate training for those areas.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Performs proper specimen collection (blood and non-blood), including patient prep, labeling, handling, processing, transportation, and storage, complying with all standards.
• Verifies and processes patient registration data and test orders in hospital or laboratory information systems, including ABN compliance.
• Processes specimens according to established guidelines.
• Maintains a safe, clean working environment, adhering to infection control and hazardous waste policies.
• Performs waived tests and assists with other testing platforms under technical oversight.

Required Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certified as a phlebotomy technician.
• Experience drawing blood or completed an approved phlebotomy training program.
• Experience in a clinical laboratory environment.
