Position Information





















The Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences is seeking a positive, dependable, detail-oriented Field/Laboratory Technical Assistant to assist with oceanographic research in Antarctica from October 2022 through March/April 2023. This position will be responsible for leading the field team in sampling and data collection for the Palmer Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) project (http://pal.lternet.edu/), monitoring phytoplankton dynamics in response to rapidly changing physical conditions (temperature warming, sea ice melt, etc.) along the West Antarctic Peninsula.

Job Responsibilities include:
1.) Field excursions out on a small research vessel 3 days a week deploying oceanographic instruments and collecting water samples, processing water samples in the lab, maintaining data logs, and basic data analysis.
2.) 6-day work weeks, sometimes with long hours on field days.
3.) Managing field team while deployed.
4.) Setting up and packing lab at start and end of field season.

Qualifications





Requires a Bachelor's degree in Marine Sciences, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
Experience with phytoplankton and oceanographic methods, such as Chlorophyll a extractions, water filtration, CTD and Niskan bottle sampling, Optical instrumentation, fluorometry.








The best suited candidate should have the following knowledge:

Must be able to do the following:
. 6-day work weeks, sometimes with long hours on field days
* Work on small boats in variable conditions - wind, swell, cold temperatures (20-30 deg F)
* Work and live in a community of 40 people for 6 months
. Remote field site only accessible by a 4 day trip on a ship, departing from Chile.
. Must be able to pass Physical Qualification medical and dental checks.
. Must have a Valid/unexpired Passport
