Laboratory Support Specialist – Glassware Operations

Location: 777 Old Saw Mill Rd., Tarrytown, NY


Contract Duration: 12 Months (Potential for Extension or Full-Time Conversion)


Pay Rate: $22.53 –$25/hour (W2)

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Senior Inventory Specialist to provide critical laboratory support as part of a dynamic PerkinElmer lab services team. The role will support centralized laboratory glassware services, including the collection, processing, cleaning, inspection, sanitization, inventory management, and return of laboratory glassware and plasticware to customer locations. All items must be carefully inspected to ensure cleanliness, usability, and compliance with established procedures before redistribution. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative laboratory support environment.


Key Responsibilities


  • Support the development, revision, implementation, and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to glassware processing and laboratory support activities.

  • Mentor and train new team members on glassware processing procedures, safety requirements, and equipment operation.

  • Partner with the team lead to identify and implement continuous process improvement initiatives.

  • Collect, transport, and deliver laboratory glassware and plasticware while following established handling and contamination-control procedures.

  • Follow approved procedures for handling and transporting contaminated and non-contaminated laboratory materials.

  • Operate autoclaves for decontamination and sanitization activities.

  • Operate glassware washers, dry-heat sterilizers, and ultrasonic baths.

  • Prepare glassware, caps, and related laboratory items for sanitization according to established procedures.

  • Inspect glassware for cleanliness, residue, damage, and structural defects before release.

  • Perform routine inspections and operational checks of glass-washing and autoclave equipment.

  • Complete monthly descaling and routine preventive maintenance activities.

  • Maintain temperature chart recorders, equipment logs, and other required documentation in accordance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP).

  • Monitor glassware inventory levels and communicate shortages, deficiencies, or other inventory concerns to the Glassware Lead.

  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and housekeeping standards throughout glassware processing areas.

  • Follow all applicable safety procedures and proactively identify and elevate safety or operational concerns.

  • Complete required training within established timelines and maintain compliance with health, safety, environmental, security, and operational requirements.

  • Collaborate with other laboratory support teams to ensure efficient and seamless service delivery.

  • Cross-train and provide backup support for other laboratory support functions as needed.

  • Demonstrate proper use of laboratory equipment and software after completing required training.

Basic Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline; OR

  • Associate's degree in a scientific discipline with 2+ years of relevant laboratory or operational experience; OR

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 5+ years of experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, or related operational environment.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous experience in glass washing, laboratory support, or laboratory services.

  • Experience mentoring or training new employees.

  • Experience developing, revising, maintaining, or following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Experience operating laboratory support equipment such as autoclaves, glassware washers, sterilizers, or ultrasonic baths.


Working Environment & Physical Requirements


  • Ability to work in a laboratory or controlled environment while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as lab coats and safety glasses.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where workload and completion demands may be high.

  • Ability to remain stationary for more than 25% of the workday.

  • Ability to frequently move between laboratories, corridors, adjoining rooms, and buildings across the site.

  • Ability to regularly bend, squat, stretch, reach, and operate instruments, equipment, tools, and controls.

  • Ability to occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds, with potential for occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring close-range and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to operate computers and standard office equipment, including calculators, copy machines, and printers.

  • May be required to handle hazardous waste in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including identifying, handling, generating, accumulating, storing, and labeling hazardous waste.

  • Work may involve exposure to laboratory hazards, including extreme temperatures, biological materials, and hazardous chemicals.

  • May be required to complete medical clearance, respiratory protection training, and fit testing for the use of respirators when required for laboratory safety.
