At NorthBay Health, the Laboratory Supervisor is a licensed clinical laboratory scientist with demonstrated expertise and supervisory experience in all areas of the clinical laboratory. This is a working supervisory role that includes twenty percent bench work and is responsible for the technical and direct supervision of all laboratory personnel, quality control and patient results, as well as maintenance of policies and procedures. The Laboratory Supervisor is a member of the director’s management team and is responsible for operational activities during normal business hours for the clinical laboratory. This role also encompasses the management of human, fiscal, and other resources, development of personnel, compliance with regulatory and professional standards and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork.

Primary Job Duties
  • Monitors departmental compliance with applicable professional, accreditation, and regulatory standards through the review of quality control data, patient results, temperature and maintenance logs, amended reports, and critical value documentation.
  • Develops and manages staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage and core staffing levels. Maintains staffing within budgeted parameters by evaluating workload demands, adjusting schedules as needed, monitoring daily coverage, and ensuring accurate completion of time and attendance records.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection process by interviewing candidates, hiring qualified personnel, overseeing orientation activities, and completing introductory performance evaluations.
  • Assumes accountability for the work performance of supervised employees. Conducts and documents performance evaluations within established timelines and provides ongoing feedback to support employee development.
  • Provides coaching and counseling to staff as appropriate and administers disciplinary actions in collaboration with the Director and Human Resources department.
  • Completes and submits employee incident and accident reports, ensures appropriate follow‑up actions, and maintains employee competency records and documentation.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership, problem-solving, and conflict‑resolution skills by effectively addressing departmental and interdepartmental issues at the lowest appropriate level. Maintains effective communication across teams and departments.
  • Assesses departmental educational needs and collaborates with the Director to develop, implement, and evaluate annual staff education and competency programs.
  • Maintains ongoing Quality Improvement, Quality Assurance, and Patient Safety initiatives consistent with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and laboratory standards.
  • Coordinates proficiency testing activities, including assignment to Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLSs), review of results, and submission through designated online systems.
  • Investigates proficiency testing discrepancies and completes corrective action documentation to ensure regulatory compliance and process improvement.
  • Reviews, updates, and maintains assigned laboratory policies and procedures to ensure accuracy, compliance, and adherence to current standards and best practices.
  • Participates in special projects, interdisciplinary committees, and organizational initiatives as assigned.
  • Assists the Director in the development, implementation, and management of annual personnel, operating expense, and capital budgets.
  • Maintains Clinical Laboratory Scientist competency by participating in scheduled staffing rotations and providing coverage in general laboratory areas as needed.
  • Promotes teamwork, employee engagement, and positive customer service relationships to support a collaborative and patient‑focused work environment.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
  • BS Degree and graduation from an approved school of medical technology.
Licensure
  • State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License. ASCP or equivalent.
Experience
  • Six years of current laboratory experience in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Prior supervisory experience at the supervisor level or additional business training.
Skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent judgment and technical skills.
  • Ability to supervise laboratory personnel.
  • Must possess teaching ability, leadership and high professional standards.
  • Must be well organized, be able to set priorities, work independently and is an effective team member.

Hours Of Work
  • Day shift including rotating weekends with the other supervisory staff. Shift or emergency relief required when needed. Approximately 75% of work time is dedicated to administrative functions.

Compensation Structure

NorthBay Health uses a structured compensation framework. Staff‑level positions use a step‑based system (Steps 1-5) based on years of directly related experience, with Step 5 representing 20 or more years of experience in the role. Manager level and above positions are paid a fixed annual base salary and are eligible for a variable incentive compensation plan. Physician compensation is structured based on specialty and role requirements.
