Overview

Illinois CancerCare is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor to lead our laboratory team across multiple clinic locations. This position oversees the Phlebotomists, Lab Assistants, and Medical Laboratory Techs and is responsible for staffing, scheduling, workflow coordination, employee development, quality assurance, and daily laboratory operations.

The Laboratory Supervisor helps ensure patients receive timely and accurate laboratory services while supporting staff, addressing day-to-day operational needs, and maintaining quality and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader who enjoys developing employees, improving processes, and fostering a positive team environment.

Responsibilities
What You'll Do
  • Lead and supervise laboratory staff, including phlebotomists, lab assistants, and medical laboratory technologists.
  • Coordinate staffing, scheduling, and daily workflow across multiple Illinois CancerCare locations to ensure efficient operations and appropriate staff coverage.
  • Manage employee onboarding, training coordination, coaching, performance management, and professional development.
  • Monitor productivity, turnaround times, patient flow, and service levels to support excellent patient care.
  • Address day-to-day operational and personnel issues.
  • Coordinate laboratory operations communication between clinic locations to ensure consistency and standardization.
  • Partner with Lab Quality & Compliance Manager and Laboratory Medical Director to support regulatory readiness and implementation of quality initiatives.
  • Monitor inventory levels, coordinate supply ordering, and support cost-effective operations.
  • Collaborate with providers, nursing, and other departments to support efficient patient flow and excellent service.
  • Serve as a resource for laboratory staff and assist with testing activities as needed.
  • Work with outside reference labs to ensure seamless operations and timely results.
  • Serve as a working supervisor by assisting with laboratory and phlebotomy operations as needed to support patient care and departmental goals.
  • Travel to satellite clinic locations as necessary.
Qualifications
What We're Looking For
  • Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related laboratory science field.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), or equivalent through ASCP or another recognized certifying agency.
  • Four years of experience in a laboratory.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory operations, quality systems, regulatory requirements, and laboratory safety practices.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

Requires corrected vision, color perception and hearing to normal range. Requires legible handwriting. May require working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.

Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, chemotherapy, biohazardous specimens & wastes and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
