Job summary

UAB Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor to oversee the technical and scientific operations of a clinical laboratory at Cooper Green. The role includes supervising staff across hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, immunology, serology and phlebotomy, while maintaining QC/QA, policies, and procedures.

The supervisor will manage staff schedules, payroll, inventory, and vendor contracts, ensuring compliance with CLIA, JCAHO, CAP and OSHA.

Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Science or Medical Technology.
  • Minimum of five years of post-graduate work experience as a Medical Technologist.
  • MT (ASCP) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee technical and scientific activities of laboratory personnel and ensure adherence to policies and quality control.
  • Coordinate planning, organizing and scheduling of a section of the clinical laboratory.
  • Ensure compliance with CLIA, JCAHO, CAP and OSHA during operations and inspections.
  • Supervise staff training and competency assessments; manage staff schedules and payroll.
  • Manage inventory, supplies, and vendor contracts under department direction.
  • Collaborate with Laboratory Manager to budget and oversee vendor relationships and billing support as needed.
  • Lead process improvements and ensure accurate documentation and reporting of QC/QA data.

GENERAL SUMMARY Responsible for the technical, scientific, and/or direct supervision of laboratory personnel and maintenance of policies, procedures, and quality control practices within the department. Work involves planning, organizing, and scheduling the activities of a section of a clinical laboratory (hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, immunology, serology, and phlebotomy). The work includes performing the more advanced and specialized laboratory work. Duties may be performed in a specific area of the lab. Maintains his/her technical abilities to evaluate, instruct, and assist in all areas of the respective department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manages laboratory personnel to ensure the compliance and appropriate usage of the organization’s Electronic Medical Record, LIS, and other department specific operating systems.
  • Ensures that technical operations meet requirements of CLIA, JCAHO, CAP, and OSHA. Prepares for and participates in Laboratory inspections.
  • Responsible for counseling, evaluating and administering competency of laboratory staff. Supervises training of new employees and students.
  • Arranges staff schedules to assure adequate staff and approves all time sheet and vacation requests. Responsible for payroll.
  • Responsible for inventory management and supply ordering.
  • Ensures that incident and variance reports are completed, discussed with manager, and submitted to appropriate administrator.
  • Resolves technical and quality control problems
  • Works with IT to update and test LIS and EMR systems
  • Reviews all maintenance, QC/QA data, performs statistical analysis, correlations, linearities, validation of new instrumentation
  • Writes and reviews procedure manuals
  • Manage vendor contracts under the direction of the Department Manager
  • May assist billing department with client billing, CPT, and diagnosis code management/evaluation.
  • Assists staff with special procedures/testing, provides training and education to meet and maintain competency
  • Works collaboratively with Laboratory Manager to develop and manage the department budget
  • Works collaboratively with Laboratory Manager to develop and manage new and existing vendor relationships
  • All other duties as assigned by Department Manager
  • In the absence of the manager, assumes all authority and responsibility for all matters of the assigned department of the laboratory, including the daily efficient operation of the department, good quality control practices, scheduling, personnel policy interpretation and counseling, equipment and record keeping maintenance, adequate supply inventory, reference laboratory testing, maintenance of budget limits, maintains good rapport with other supervisors, managers, departments and physicians.
  • In an effort to improve quality of care and enhance efficiency, this leader will:
    • Analyze existing business processes and develop strategies for improvement.
    • Implement, monitor and upgrade the improved processes.
    • Document all process changes and updates.
    • Monitor the impact of process changes and make adjustments as necessary.
    • Prepare and present reports on the progress and impact of process improvement initiatives.
    • Manage process improvement projects from inception to completion.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Position requires BS Degree in Science or Medical Technology. Minimum of five years of post-graduate work experience as a Medical Technologist. MT (ASCP) certification.

Preferred qualifications: Experience with the supervision of laboratory personnel and knowledge of general accounting principles.

WORK ENVIRONMENT This role may require lifting up to 30 lbs. The work location for this role is onsite.
