Job summary

Mercyhealth in Rockford, IL is seeking a skilled laboratory professional to collect patient specimens, run tests across CLIA complexity levels, and ensure timely, accurate results. You will monitor QC, troubleshoot issues, and support staff training to maintain high standards of patient care.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science preferred.
  • MLT/AMT certification preferred.

Job description

Overview

This role involves collecting and testing patient specimens, ensuring results are accurate, and using laboratory systems to document and report findings. The position also includes maintaining lab equipment, following quality and safety standards, troubleshooting issues, training staff, and helping oversee daily laboratory operations to support patient care.

Schedule: 40-hours a week, second shift

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collect patient specimens

  • Utilize the information system to receive patients, order and collect samples, test results, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities, and produce reports required to perform job tasks.

  • Confirm accuracy of patient sample identification prior to analyses; evaluate specimen quality and identify when unacceptable. Document information concerning specimen quality and impact of sub-optimal specimens on test values. Initiate recollection procedure as indicated.

  • Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity lab tests as defined by CLIA 42 CFR 493.

  • Analyze test results prior to release to chart for validity and accuracy. Recognize subtle but significant problems with testing methodologies. Troubleshoot suspect results using technical knowledge and experience. Implement corrective action when inaccuracies are identified.

  • Ensure designated turnaround times for results are met and that critical results are appropriately reported and documented.

  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing procedures as defined by policy.

  • Interpret and troubleshoot quality control results to ensure accurate and precise test results.

  • Perform preventative maintenance, advanced troubleshooting, and calibration of laboratory instrumentation.

  • Perform method and instrument evaluation and implementation.

  • Investigate and resolve technical issues.

  • Participate on interdepartmental committees or teams.

  • Teach students and train new partners.

  • Review quality control results, submit data to peer review organization, and make necessary adjustments for area of specialty.

  • Ensure enrollment in appropriate proficiency testing programs and administer proficiency testing according to regulatory standards, ensuring acceptable performance.

  • Develop effective orientation checklists and training protocols for partners.

  • Ensure initial and annual competency checklists are completed according to policy.

  • Prepare and deliver partner performance evaluations and skill/competency checklists.

  • Evaluate new methods, procedures, and equipment.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and represent the lab during accreditation surveys.

  • Serve as a technical resource to medical staff, system laboratories, and other departments.

  • Maintain appropriate supply levels of inventory to assure smooth operation of the department.

  • Recommend capital purchases during budget process, including quotations and rationale for purchase.

  • Keep current with developing technology and changes in the laboratory industry.

  • Maintain competency in current procedures and gain competency for new methods implemented.

  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, including directing workflow, sound judgment in problem resolution, and providing constructive feedback to improve workflow.

  • Act as a General Supervisor in the absence of the General Supervisor, including scheduling, ordering supplies, and resolving issues that cannot wait for the technical consultant return.

  • Take ownership of the department, identify areas for improvement, and make suggestions to the General Supervisor with the ability to resolve issues.

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred with a minimum of 4 years of experience in a laboratory setting.

  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science preferred.

Certification/Licensure

MLT/AMT certification preferred.

Level of Supervision

Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Supervises

Directly supervises the laboratory staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include assigning and directing work.

Pay Range: $28.83 - $43.25
