Job summary

University of Missouri Health Care seeks a dynamic laboratory leader in the Labs – Hematology, Coag, and Flow Cytometry to drive quality and operational excellence.

The role requires at least three years of technical experience in a hospital or clinical lab, a bachelor’s degree in the biological or physical sciences, and ASCP or equivalent certification where required. Supervisory responsibilities include staffing, training, and quality control in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in the biological or physical sciences or equivalent experience.
  • ASCP or equivalent registration may be required to meet accreditation requirements; additional year of technical experience may be added otherwise.
  • Three years of technical experience in a hospital or laboratory setting.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and/or instruct technical support personnel (including students) performing standard and specialized tests.
  • Coordinate quality control procedures, record keeping, reporting, and scheduling as needed.
  • Supervise maintenance of laboratory equipment, supplies, and handling of infectious materials and hazardous chemicals.
  • Troubleshoot specialized and routine laboratory equipment and perform limited maintenance.
  • Perform highly specialized or complex procedures as needed and more routine tests when staff shortages occur.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements in the laboratory environment.
  • Instruct and supervise students rotating through the laboratory.
  • Interview, hire, train, and evaluate support staff; develop staffing schedules to ensure unit coverage.

Detailed job description

Supervise and/or instruct the work of technical support personnel (including students) performing a variety of standard and specialized research or medical diagnostic tests.

Coordinate (or assist in the coordination of) quality control procedures for the laboratory, including record keeping/reporting and scheduling, as necessary.

Supervise the proper maintenance of laboratory, lab equipment, supplies, and handling/disposal of infectious materials and hazardous chemicals/materials.

Troubleshoot specialized and routine laboratory equipment and perform limited maintenance, as necessary.

Perform highly specialized or complex procedures in the laboratory as necessary and perform more routine tests as necessitated by personnel shortages.

Comply with all appropriate regulatory and accreditation requirements applicable to the laboratory environment being supervised.

Instruct and supervise students rotating through the laboratory.

Interview, hire, train, and evaluate (or assist) support staff.

Develop, coordinate, and maintain daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of unit coverage and continuity of care.

Monitor time and attendance in alignment with MU Health Care policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely submittal/approval for payroll purposes

May complete unit/department specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in the biological or physical sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired.

Depending on the laboratory, a bachelor's degree in medical technology or registration as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or an equivalent accreditation group (AMT, HEW/HHS) may be required to meet accreditation requirements. Where no specific requirement exists, one (1) additional year of technical experience will be added to experience requirement.

Three (3) years of technical experience in specified area in a hospital or similar laboratory setting.

Preferred qualifications

Supervisory experience is preferred.

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
