Job summary

Tempus AI, Inc. is seeking a Laboratory Safety Manager to oversee enterprise safety and emergency management policies across all laboratory operations.

The role ensures regulatory compliance with CAP/CLIA, NYS, OSHA, FDA, and DOT guidelines and maintains up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all labs. The position combines hands-on safety program management with training, audits, incident reporting, and continuous process improvement, including supervising staff and coordinating with Quality

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, chemistry, biology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in an EHS-related role is desired.
  • Experience working in CLIA/CAP laboratory is desired.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations for work environment and personnel.
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee enterprise safety and emergency management policies.
  • Develop, review, revise, and maintain laboratory safety policies.
  • Ensure compliance with CAP/CLIA, NYS, OSHA, FDA, and DOT safety regulations.
  • Monitor handling and disposal of chemicals and biohazardous materials and coordinate hazardous waste disposal.
  • Manage Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure complete binders.
  • Manage incident reporting and safety audits.
  • Establish PPE protocols and ensure training completion.
  • Train staff for emergencies including fires, spills, exposures, and natural hazards.
  • Maintain safety equipment and annual safety training.
  • Lead safety committee and safety discussions.

The Laboratory Safety Manager oversees enterprise safety and emergency management policies, ensures regulatory compliance across all laboratory operations, and champions a culture of safety among lab staff. This role combines hands-on safety program management with training, auditing, and continuous process improvement responsibilities.

What You'll Do
  • Oversee enterprise safety and emergency management policies.
  • Develop, review, revise, and maintain laboratory safety policies.
  • Understand, advise staff, and ensure compliance with CAP/CLIA, NYS, OSHA, FDA, and DOT regulations with regard to safety.
  • Monitor the use and disposal of chemicals and biohazardous materials from all lab areas per state and federal guidelines and coordinate with external vendors for hazardous waste disposal.
  • Manage and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all labs and ensure all SDS binders are complete and up to date.
  • Manage incident and event reporting for any safety incidents or events.
  • Establish and enforce appropriate PPE protocols for laboratory staff.
  • Provide training and ensure all lab staff have completed safety training and are current on their annual quizzes and/or updates to safety protocols.
  • Ensure personnel have knowledge and training for how to respond to emergencies including but not limited fires, spills, exposures, and forces of nature.
  • Ensure safety equipment is maintained according to requirements (eye wash, fire extinguishers, showers, first aid kits, etc.).
  • Complete and document monthly safety audits to address issues within the laboratory.
  • Conduct and oversee new-hire laboratory safety training and annual fire safety training for content and completeness.
  • Prepare for and participate in laboratory audits and meet with Quality and Management teams as needed.
  • Write policies and procedures to meet safety code compliance for the lab.
  • Assess ergonomic risk and provide solutions to lab and workstation ergonomics.
  • Oversee accident investigation process and work with laboratory management to determine corrective/preventative actions in response to workplace injuries.
  • Serve as chair of the safety committee.
  • Facilitates safety discussions, contributing observations and listening to feedback.
  • Prepare safety training material.
  • Delivers safety training to team members.
  • Lead and manage assigned staff.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and lift repeatedly for extended periods of time
  • Remain in standing, walking, and bending position for extended periods of time

Chicago Pay Range: $85,000-$117,000 The expected salary range may vary for other locations. Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience.
