A prominent health system in Newark is seeking a detail-oriented laboratory technician. The role entails managing laboratory specimens with accuracy, providing excellent patient care, and adhering to established procedures in a clinical environment. Candidates should possess strong communication skills, alongside a high school diploma and preferred clinical experience.
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To receive, sort, verify and order tests on laboratory specimens.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives and sorts laboratory specimens and request slips.
Verifies match of request slip and specimen. Utilizes patient demographics, medical record number, financial number, physician and encounter for accurate identification.
Utilizes proper alternate guarantor screens for pediatric and geriatric patients.
Orders correct blood tests for future rounds on the correct patient for the correct time.
Follows all established LIS downtime procedures.
Picks up and delivers lab specimens as needed.
Maintains equipment and supplies.
Answers telephone calls from physicians, nurses and laboratory personnel. When required, gives test results in an efficient, knowledgeable and courteous manner.
Prints identification label and affixes to proper specimen container.
Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient needs, and provide the care needed.
Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of clericalmethods and techniques
Knowledge of office equipment and machines
Knowledge of a keyboard (typing or computer)
Ability to utilize information to accurately identify patient and match specimen with request
Ability to verbally communicate in a clear and understanding manner
Ability to courteously and efficiently handle all telephone requests
Ability to follow written and verbal procedures
