Pinellas County Utilities is seeking a Laboratory Project Coordinator with experience overseeing projects and serving as the primary client interface within a NELAP certified lab. The Utility Department’s Water Quality Laboratory is a state certified laboratory that analyzes both environmental and drinking water samples. The Laboratory Project Coordinator is responsible for coordinating laboratory activities, technical projects, regulatory documentation, and reporting activities while ensuring compliance with applicable standards, policies, and procedures. This position serves as a senior technical and operational resource, providing lead oversight, coordinating complex laboratory workflows, managing select contracts, supporting quality assurance efforts, and assisting laboratory leadership with planning, reporting, and staff development activities. Work is performed under the general direction of a Laboratory Manager.
This Project Coordinator (Laboratory Project Coordinator) position is located at: Logan Lab, 1620 Ridge Road South, Largo FL 33778.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
What Would You Do?
- Coordinates day-to-day laboratory operations including oversight of sample receipt, log-in, chain-of-custody documentation, tracking, and final reporting processes.
- Reviews laboratory data and reports for completeness, accuracy, and compliance prior to release to internal and external stakeholders.
- Acts as the primary client contact, building strong relationships and ensuring concerns are addressed promptly and professionally.
- Utilizes a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database to coordinate data entry, reporting, tracking, and operational workflows.
- Serves as a liaison between the laboratory and internal County departments, municipalities, consultants, regulatory agencies, and external service providers.
- Assists the Laboratory Manager in coordinating and executing daily operational responsibilities to achieve organizational goals.
- Prepares technical, operational, and administrative reports, correspondence, and presentations.
- Manages select laboratory-related contracts, including contracts with commercial laboratories; monitors scope, deliverables, timelines, compliance, and supports invoicing and performance review.
- Tracks laboratory performance measures and operational metrics; prepares summaries, analyses, and reports for management review.
- Provides direct supervision to assigned staff, including coaching, work assignment, performance feedback, and employee development.
- Contributes to the overall effectiveness of Laboratory operations and participate in a team-oriented work environment.
- Performs related work as assigned or required.
What Do You Need.
Experience: Environmental laboratory experience with a high level of expert knowledge of project management and QA/QC practices as it pertains to methodologies and laboratory accreditation requirements. One year of lead worker or supervisory training.
Degree: Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology, Environmental science, physical sciences or engineering; or related discipline.
- 8+ years’ experience as described above; or
- Associate’s degree and 6+ years of related experience as described above.
- Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of related experience as described above.
- Master’s degree and 2+ years of related experience as described above.
- Doctoral degree and some experience as described above.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver’s License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
- Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
Highly Desirable
- Experience coordinating technical projects, contracts, or vendor-managed services.
- Experience in laboratory analysis including the understanding of NELAC/TNI standards and documentation requirements.
- Experience working with Laboratory Information Management Systems and proficient in the use of Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, SharePoint and other applicable computer software applications.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Two years of experience at an administrative or supervisory level.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to water quality, wastewater treatment, and data validity.
- Knowledge of current regulations and methods used in the collection and analyses of samples.
- Ability to coordinate complex technical workflows and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain effective working relationships with Pinellas County employees at all levels.
- Ability to present scientific ideas and findings clearly and concisely in written, oral and graphic form.
