Description:Phlebotomists collect blood specimens from outpatients while adhering to established protocols to ensure proper sample collection and patient safety.They transport blood specimens to laboratory departments in accordance with proper procedures for such transport and handling.In addition, they conduct in-service education programs relating to theories and techniques of phlebotomy.Phlebotomists perform related clerical work as part of their duties.Duties include collecting blood specimens through venipuncture, capillary puncture techniques, or making an incision on the patient's arm.They provide phlebotomy services to patients following the orders of the patient's physician.Data concerning blood specimens is entered into a computer database.Phlebotomists maintain appointment schedules and log patients seen and tests obtained.They record results of patient tests and file them appropriately.They keep work-related statistics and perform related clerical duties.Phlebotomists supervise, teach, and provide support to medical technology students in both theories and techniques of phlebotomy.They design and implement formal and informal programs of instruction to ensure adherence to established protocols and procedures for proper sample collection and patient safety.Phybotomists attend and/or present related in-service programs.They maintain proper inventory of supplies and materials needed for the daily collection of blood specimens.Phlebotomists participate in the overall function of the laboratory by assuming occasional substitutions for other shifts or working prolonged shifts.They perform other related duties as required or directed.
