Responsibilities

Laboratory - Phlebotomist

Shift: 12:30pm-09:00pm

Weekly Hours: 40

Description:Performs phlebotomy duties on inpatients and outpatients.Contract phlebotomists must be competent to perform tasks and assignments independently.Responsibilities may include drawing blood from a high volume of patients and handling a percentage of difficult cases.Assembles necessary equipment on work trays or collection carts.Verifies patient identities utilizing approved identifiers prior to drawing blood.Engages with the patient to reduce anxiety about the procedure.Draws blood using proper techniques and various collection methods.Applies tourniquet, locates veins, disinfects puncture areas, and inserts needles to collect blood.Labels samples in the presence of patients and transports collected blood to processing areas.Ensures sufficient blood volume is drawn for each requested test.Collects specimens beyond blood, including urine tests and glucose tolerance tests.May perform additional laboratory procedures such as test accessioning and specimen processing.Interprets physician orders from written requests and may input test orders into the computer system.Rotates to handle phone requests for test-related inquiries and communicates results to authorized personnel.Records rejected specimens according to established protocols.Provides excellent customer service and demonstrates strong communication skills.Adheres to established Customer Service Standards of Behavior.Recognizes and responds to emergent situations appropriately, including initiating CPR when needed.Takes necessary actions during emergency situations or drills.

Requirements:Completion of a Phlebotomist Certification.

General Knowledge:Must have at least two years of work experience in the field of phlebotomy performed within the last 3 years prior to submission.Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
