Effingham Hospital, Inc. is seeking a Phlebotomist to work under the Laboratory Director to perform blood draws, specimen handling, labeling, and transport to the lab with accurate data entry and patient identification.

This role requires strong customer service and the ability to prioritize a workload in a fast-paced environment. Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program and certification within 12 months of hire are required or preferred; maintains compliance with infection control

Qualifications

  • Education equivalent to high school; completion of an accredited phlebotomy program satisfies the education requirement.
  • Completion of accredited phlebotomy training; current certification preferred.
  • Certification required within 12 months of hire (ASCP/ASPT/NCA or equivalent).
  • Minimum 6 months venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients.
  • Ensure proper patient identification and accurate labeling of specimens.
  • Input test orders and patient data into the computer system.
  • Maintain sanitary and well-supplied test trays and work area.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety standards (OSHA).
  • Communicate with medical staff and other departments while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Adapt to sudden changes in scheduling and prioritize workload.

Description

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Director or designee in charge, the Phlebotomist is responsible for patient identification, drawing blood, specimen handling, labeling and transporting specimens to the lab, and inputting data into the computer in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies and procedures. This position requires customer service skills and knowledge of different tests that are run in the laboratory or sent to reference laboratories. The Phlebotomist may have to prioritize a workload of competing priorities and draws in different areas. Communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. Position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
  1. Ensures adherence to proper infection control, OSHA, and safety standards.
  2. Performs blood collections by vein puncture and capillary techniques for all age groups; Consistently finds the vein and draws blood in accordance with policies and procedures.
  3. Handles telephone requests with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality.
  4. Promptly collects and receives all specimens scheduled in the computer, or as requested.
  5. Accurately and promptly orders appropriate tests in the computer system
  6. Performs data entry of patient information in an accurate and timely manner.
  7. Maintains test tray in a sanitary and properly supplied condition at all times.
  8. Determine the correct supplies needed and prepare test materials before each test.
  9. Verifies patient identification and matches with the order label prior to the test.
  10. Accurately labels all specimens.
  11. Disposes of used needles in the approved manner.
  12. Reports any changes in the patient’s condition to appropriate nursing personnel.
  13. Adaptable to sudden changes in scheduling.
  14. Completes all paperwork and reports timely and accurately. Maintains a well-organized, clean, neat work area.
  15. Assists the medical lab technician and medical technologists as needed.
  16. Maintains the filing system for patient orders and results.
  17. Distributes specimens to appropriate areas for testing.
  18. Performs administrative and clerical duties as needed, and other duties assigned.
Requirements

Minimum Level of Education: Education level equivalent to completion of high school. A graduate of an accredited phlebotomy training program will satisfy the education requirement.

Formal Training: Completion of an accredited course of study in phlebotomy, current certification preferred.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Phlebotomy certification through ASCP, ASPT, NCA or equivalent agency is required within 12 months of hire.

Work Experience: Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting required. One (1) year of experience as a phlebotomist preferred.
