University of Idaho is seeking a Laboratory Manager for the Image and Data Acquisition Core (IDAC) in Moscow. The role oversees operation, maintenance, service and user training for core research equipment, including flow cytometers, microscopes, ddPCR, calorimetry and related devices, while managing user charges and vendor relations.

Responsibilities

• Provide functional supervision of day-to-day activities of graduate and undergraduate students, staff researchers and research support staff.
• Develop guidelines and protocols for lab operations; assure quality control and budget maintenance.
• Operate, test and repair electronic and/or scientific test equipment used in the IDAC.
• Coordinate vendor support and maintain productive relationships with university personnel, equipment users and vendors.
• Directing and/or planning and implementing components of the scientific program; monitor research projects with other agencies.
• Prepare reports assessing use, distribution, fate, exposure, and risk of hazardous substances; develop risk assessments.

Posting Context Statement:

The IMCI Image and Data Acquisition Core (IDAC) Manager reports tothe IDAC Director and IMCI Director within the University ofIdaho's Institute for Modeling Collaboration and Innovation (IMCI).The position oversees operation, maintenance, service and usertraining for core research equipment, including flow cytometers,microscopes, ddPCR, calorimetry, surface plasmon resonance andpinning robots. The Manager administers user charges, provides coreusage statistics, coordinates vendor support and maintainsproductive relationships with University personnel, equipment usersand vendors. This position will work between 20-30 hours perweek.

Position Overview:

Provides functional supervision of day-to-day activities of alaboratory or field research enterprise, including directing theactivities of graduate and undergraduate students, staffresearchers and research support staff. Develops guidelines andprotocols for lab operations. Assures quality control; maintainsbudget; and operates, tests and repairs electronic and/orscientific test equipment used. Assists with the construction andmodification of new and prototype scientific devices.

Duties may include:

• Providing consulting services to department management, publicand private sector entities
• Providing final review of policies and procedures; recommendingchanges based on prevailing scientific evidence
• Supervising scientific/technical staff
• Directing and/or planning and implementing a component of thescientific program
• Directing and/or developing and monitoring research projects inconjunction with other agencies
• Directing and/or preparing reports assessing use, distribution,fate, exposure, and probability of adverse effects of chemicalsand/or radiological constituents or other hazardous substances inspecific use situations
• Directing and/or developing and/ or providing final detailedreview of risk assessments and making recommendations forimprovement where risk level is unacceptable
• Establishing work priorities and performance standards; may beinvolved in hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning andreviewing work
• Making managerial decisions that directly affect theefficiency, cost, reputation and service quality of thelaboratory
• Developing budgets, distributing budgeted funds, and exercisingthe primary control over a relatively small budget
• Other duties as assigned

Required Experience:

• Two years of post-Bachelor's research work to includetechnical/administrative experience in research operations

Additional Preferred:

• Strong lab-based research experience
• Technical expertise/experience with either flow cytometry orconfocal microscopy or both
• Interest in expanding expertise in new and cutting-edgetechnologies
• Knowledge of research methods, statistics and principles ofoptics, microscopy or cytometry
• Technical expertise in at least one of the following areas:flow cytometry, microscopy and image acquisition techniques
• Laboratory research management experience including monitoringsafety compliance, training personnel and budgeting and procuringnecessary supplies/equipment
• Experience with developing technical written materials, such asscientific/lab protocols
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, scientists,administrators and vendors, orally and in writing
• Strong customer service orientation
