Job summary

HHMI's del Mármol Lab in Boston is seeking a highly organized Laboratory Manager I to oversee daily operations, manage supplies and equipment, and support cutting-edge structural biology work in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's in a STEM field, has 3+ years of lab experience with at least 1 year supervising others, and brings a proactive, team-oriented approach to budgeting, safety, SOP development, and training.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
  • Three or more years of laboratory experience, including at least one year in a supervisory role.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee general lab operations including ordering, receiving, and stock management.
  • Maintain cell lines and cell cultures; support structural biology workflows.
  • Train new lab members and provide supervisory oversight.
  • Assist with budgeting, reimbursements, schedules, and meetings.
  • Develop lab guidelines and SOPs; ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Manager Ito join the del Mármol Lab at Harvard Medical School. At the delMármol Lab, we are deciphering the molecular logic of the sense ofsmell using cutting-edge structural biology (cryo-EM),electrophysiology and neurophysiology. Our ultimate goal is touncover how insect vectors of disease—like mosquitoes—detect theirhuman hosts, and use these insights to develop mechanisms ofdisease control. This is an excellent opening for someone lookingto establish themselves long-term in a lab management role —whether you are an experienced lab manager ready to grow, or asenior research technician looking to take that next step andtransition into lab management. The del Mármol Lab focuses on themolecular mechanisms of sensory processing, with an emphasis inunderstanding the sense of smell in insect vectors of disease. About the Laboratory Manager I Role:

This role is central to the day-to-day operations of the lab, witha strong focus on organization, administration, and team support.The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about building andsustaining a well-run lab environment and is looking to grow into along-term leadership role.

What you'll do:
  • Operational Command: Oversee general lab operations,including ordering, receiving, organizing stock, and evaluating newmaterials and state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Scientific Support: Maintain essential cell lines andcell cultures, and support ongoing experiments and structuralbiology research workflows (up to 25% of your role).
  • Team Leadership & Culture: Train new lab members,provide supervisory oversight, and help foster a positive,collaborative, and inclusive lab environment.
  • Administrative Excellence: Assist with budgetmanagement, reimbursements, scheduling lab agendas, and organizingmeetings.
  • Safety & Compliance: Act as the primary liaisonbetween the lab and HMS safety/regulatory offices. Develop labguidelines and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
What you bring:
  • Management skills: Strong organizational skills andattention to detail. First-hand experience and understanding of theoperational needs of a research lab.
  • Attitude: A positive, collaborative attitude andenthusiasm for building a strong lab culture.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
  • Experience: Three or more years of lab experience,including at least one year of supervisory experience (senior leveltechnicians with a strong desire to transition into a stablemanagement position are encouraged to apply!).
Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extendedperiods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) orarm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for exampleusing a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word;ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to moveabout workspace. The position requires mobility, including theability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as alaptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure tomalodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxicchemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances. Hiring Pay Range

$78,320.00 - $97,900.00

Pay Type: Annual

The posted range reflects HHMI’s good faith estimate of theanticipated hiring salary range for this role at the time ofposting. Actual hiring compensation is determined by a candidate’squalifications, experience, and internal equity.
