State University of New York at Buffalo is seeking a Research Support Specialist in the Department of Biochemistry at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The role combines hands‑on bench work with day‑to‑day management of a genomics lab studying chromatin organization and protein–DNA interactions that regulate gene expression.

The successful candidate will own the lab’s operational health, train students, and contribute to high‑level genomic assays and computational analyses.

Qualifications

Master’s degree plus two years of full‑time research experience or Bachelor’s degree plus four years of full‑time research experience.
Experience with lab management, purchasing, safety compliance, and supervising junior researchers is preferred.
Experience with sequencing library prep and analysis of genomic data is desirable.

Responsibilities

Own the operational health of the lab and train/mentor undergraduate and graduate researchers.
Run and manage genomic assays and computational analysis using model systems.
Support day‑to‑day lab operations and safety compliance in a collaborative environment.

Job description

A Research Support Specialist position is available in the laboratory of Dr. William K.M. Lai, in the Department of Biochemistry at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences for a scientist who wants to run a laboratory as well as work in one. The role pairs hands‑on research with day‑to‑day management of a genomics lab studying the organization of chromatin and the protein–DNA interactions that control gene expression. The research pairs high‑resolution genomic assays (e.g., ChIP‑exo, MNase‑seq, and ATAC -seq) with computational method development for interpreting the resulting data at scale, using various model systems (i.e., Saccharomyces cerevisiae, human cell lines) and in vitro protein binding. The successful candidate will own the operational health of the lab and will train and mentor undergraduate and graduate researchers at the bench. The Lai lab provides a collegial environment and has trained a diverse group of people over the years. We welcome scientists from all backgrounds and we mentor trainees at all levels.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, genomics, computational biology or a related field and two (2) years of full‑time research experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in one of the above fields and four (4) years of full‑time research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, genomics or computational biology. Experience managing a research laboratory or shared research facility, including purchasing, equipment maintenance and safety compliance; experience training and supervising junior researchers; experience with next‑generation sequencing library preparation and/or analysis of genomic sequencing data; proficiency with Python, R or the Unix command line.

Physical Demands

The individual must physically be in the laboratory setting. The majority of the tasks will be benchwork with some computational work.

Driving Requirements

Driving Requirements This position will never drive a university owned vehicle.

Salary Range

Salary Range $45,000 - $65,000
