Job summary

Hawai‘i State Department of Health in Honolulu is seeking a full-time, temporary laboratory scientist to develop and validate methods and conduct analytical work on water samples for emerging contaminants. This position is within the State Laboratories Division, Emerging Contaminants Unit, LiW initiative, supporting groundwater, drinking water and source water programs.

• Specialized laboratory experience in detecting, isolating, and identifying chemical contaminants preferred.

$5,753 - $6,728 per month, salary commensurate w/ training and experience

Exempt, non-civil service, full-time, temporary appointment. This position is located under the State Laboratories Division (SLD) as part of the Emerging Contaminants Unit (ECU) in the Laboratory Infrastructure and Workforce (LIW) initiative. The purpose of this position is to develop and validate methodologies, plan, organize, and conduct analytical work on water samples for a full range of physic-chemical emerging contaminants parameters associated with water and environmental problems in support of various programs (Groundwater, Drinking Water, and Source Water/Wellhead Protection) of the Department of Health and other agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a closely related science which included 30 semester credit hours in chemistry courses, including organic, inorganic, analytical and/or physical chemistry.

SPECIALIZED EXEPRIENCE: Two (2) years of professional work experience which demonstrated the ability to apply the scientific laws and principles of chemistry to predict results; or to interpret and evaluate the results of professional research or analyses by other chemists; or to assess the need for and validity of proposed changes and improvements in laboratory procedures and methods. Specialized laboratory experience in the detection, isolation, and identification of chemical contaminants is preferred.
