JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Administrative laboratory director and Medical Director, the Laboratory Assistant performs laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner according to established hospital policies and departmental procedures. The primary function is to assist the technologist/technician in the laboratory. The function of the laboratory assistant is to obtain specimens from properly identified patients, perform clerical duties, load barcode samples onto instruments, perform waived kit testing, inoculate microbiology media, prepare slides, perform automated staining, monitor and maintain stock levels in the immediate laboratory departments.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Graduate

Licensure: Certification in any clinical field preferred.

Experience: 2 years of laboratory experience in a hospital setting preferred.

  • Manual dexterity and good eye / hand coordination.
  • Ability to distinguish sound in low to high range to assure proper operation of clinical equipment.
  • Ability to communicate with other healthcare providers by telephone to obtain or give information critical to patient care.
  • Visual acuity, basic mathematical skills and color discrimination ability.
  • Ability to obtain and interpret pertinent information in terms of the patient’s needs that are age appropriate.
  • Ability to select proper instrumentation / supplies appropriate for age group of the patient served, particularly focusing on the neonate, pediatric, adult and geriatric patient.
  • Demonstrates consistent ability to perform clinical skills necessary in the care and treatment of a variety of ages in patients, particularly focusing on the neonate, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires flexible scheduling. Exposure to normal hazards of clinical laboratory setting such as, exposure to disease-bearing specimens, toxic chemicals and hazardous wastes. Requires walking, standing, bending, sitting and stooping. Works under stress of time constraints and workload. Subject to call-back as needed.
