Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Laboratory Assistant - Part Time.
Responsible for assisting lab staff with the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including specimen management/processing, inventory management, instrument maintenance, and communication with providers and other laboratories.
Job Responsibilities:
- Maintain supplies of laboratory items, reagents, and materials needed for specimen analysis; communicate needs to supervisor/manager.
- Ensure proper receipt and storage of laboratory materials, document deliveries per NYU policy and regulatory guidelines.
- Understand specimen requirements, communicate with providers, and document cancellations or rejections.
- Verify specimen quality before processing.
- Confirm or clarify requests with providers, modify, and place orders as needed.
- Process samples for analysis, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport, and operating automated test platforms.
- Prepare samples for storage, tracking, and disposal according to policy.
- Dispose of all regulated medical, biological, chemical, and clean waste properly.
- Clean laboratory surfaces and equipment as per protocols.
- Maintain logs for temperature and humidity for equipment and work areas.
- Complete add-on requests, retrieve specimens, and review pending test lists.
- Answer phones and assist callers regarding test requirements, availability, and TAT.
- Access test platforms to check sample status.
- Ship blood and body fluids to other sites.
- Assist with blood product modification and manage inventory (receiving, stocking, expiration).
- Collect blood via venipuncture or finger puncture.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma with 12 college credits in Chemistry or Biology.
- Laboratory experience handling blood and body fluids (excluding Intake/Accessioning).
- Knowledge of computer applications, especially Excel and Word.
- Excellent communication skills.
