Job Summary:

A Laboratory Assistant II is responsible for the proper collection and processing of laboratory specimens under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, Assistant Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor, Medical Technologist II, Medical Technologist/Technician, and/or Lead Lab Assistant. The role requires proficiency in using the laboratory information system and KPHC/EPIC to manage test pending lists and reports, as well as maintaining laboratory supplies. The candidate must demonstrate excellent customer service, teamwork, professionalism, good judgment, critical thinking, and organizational skills. This position involves working independently as the sole laboratory staff onsite at the assigned facility.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Onsite Laboratory Liaison: Serve as the main laboratory contact for the facility, working independently. Record temperatures, troubleshoot out-of-range issues, maintain equipment, and assist with training new staff and nursing personnel.
• Specimen Collection: Perform venipuncture proficiently across all age groups, escort members for urine collection, and explain procedures. Follow department policies for specimen collection, maintain professionalism, research and collect appropriate specimens, and communicate collection instructions clearly. Respond promptly to requests outside the lab, be familiar with emergency codes, and ensure PHI protection per HIPAA. Keep the work area clean and stocked.
• Customer Service: Provide respectful, compassionate care to members, resolve issues or refer them appropriately, and maintain effective relationships. Prioritize tasks to meet member needs, update members on delays, and demonstrate good communication skills.
• Member Interaction and System Competency: Greet members promptly, exhibit proficiency in Cerner and HealthConnect/EPIC systems, maintain professionalism, and adhere to patient care area policies. Use proper telephone etiquette, process orders accurately, monitor the waiting area, and protect PHI. Keep the lab area clean and stocked.
• Specimen Processing: Handle STAT, coagulation, and time-sensitive specimens immediately, notify technologists as needed, and follow department procedures. Monitor pending functions daily, keep the accession area organized, and perform other duties as assigned.
• Information and Compliance: Complete mandatory training, participate in inspections, attend meetings and educational programs, and stay informed through newsletters and system alerts. Document quality issues and communicate with supervisors.
