Job Summary:
A Laboratory Assistant II is responsible for the proper collection and processing of laboratory specimens under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, Assistant Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor, Medical Technologist II, Medical Technologist/Technician, and/or Lead Lab Assistant. He/she is expected to be proficient in the use of the laboratory information system and KPHC/EPIC to manage test pending lists/test reports (i.e., filing, distributing, faxing) and to maintain supplies associated with laboratory functions. Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills, teamwork, professionalism, good judgment, critical thinking, and organizational skills. Works independently as the only laboratory staff onsite at the assigned facility.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Serves as the onsite laboratory liaison for the facility: working independently in the lab. Record temperatures, troubleshoot when out of range, record actions, and perform equipment maintenance. Assist with training new lab employees and nursing staff.
- Collect laboratory specimens: Perform venipuncture proficiently on all age groups. Escort members for urine specimen collection, explain procedures, and follow department policies for specimen collection, including Standard Precautions. Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor. Research and collect appropriate specimens, address members respectfully, and explain collection and storage instructions clearly. Respond promptly to requests for venipunctures outside the lab. Be familiar with emergency codes and procedures. Protect PHI per HIPAA, dispose of unused labels properly, and keep work areas clean and stocked.
- Deliver excellent customer service: Show care and respect for members, resolve issues or escalate when necessary. Establish effective relationships with internal and external customers. Prioritize tasks to meet member needs, update members on delays, and verify check-in/walk-in status. Communicate effectively at all times.
- Greet members promptly: Use good customer service skills, such as eye contact and smiling. Demonstrate competency in Cerner and HealthConnect/EPIC systems. Maintain professionalism and adhere to policies regarding appearance and conduct. Use proper telephone etiquette. Process orders accurately, monitor waiting areas, and protect PHI. Keep the lab area neat, clean, and stocked with in-date supplies and patient instructions.
- Process specimens: Handle STAT, coagulation, and other time-sensitive specimens immediately. Notify technologists of STAT specimens. Follow department procedures for processing and monitor pending functions to ensure timely processing. Keep the accession area clean and stocked. Perform other duties as assigned.
- Stay informed and provide information: Complete mandatory training and competency requirements. Assist with lab preparation for inspections and participate in meetings and education programs. Read and adhere to communications such as newsletters and Cerner pop-ups. Document quality issues and communicate with supervisors.
