Job Description

HJF is seeking a Laboratory Assistant who provides laboratory support duties. Work involves the performance of a variety of laboratory tasks of minimal complexity to assist in the maintenance and operation of a research or analytical laboratory. The role is the first level in the laboratory series and requires compliance with established guidelines and quality control standards.

This position will support the Uniformed Service University of Health Sciences (USUHS)/Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP). The project requires biospecimen inventory of human sera, plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) for specimen reduction and detailed data entry for future transfer to external academic and government biorepositories.

Responsibilities
  • Perform accurate specimen inventory across multiple research studies and specimen types.
  • Enter data accurately, timely, and efficiently, maintaining clear and accurate data collection records and inventories in accordance with Good Clinical and/or Good Laboratory practices.
  • Prepare and package biological specimens for shipment to external facilities as required, ensuring shipping and specimen documentation meet International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) Title 49 CFR guidelines.
  • Follow instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain the temperature of ultra‑low freezers and LN2 cryovats as detailed in standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain supplies in the laboratory and ensure proper cleanliness and sanitation in accordance with Good Clinical and/or Good Laboratory practices, and create, collect, disseminate, and maintain appropriate study data.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor, which may include attending and participating in required training for the role.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 0–2 years of experience.

Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Compensation
  • Hourly pay range: $16.83–$20.00. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, and other factors.
