Job description

The town of Canmore is located approximately 80km west of Calgary nestled among Alberta’s Rocky Mountain Range. With quick access to a multitude of hiking, biking, cross country ski trails as well as quick access to Canada’s first National Park it’s easy to see why Canmore is an ideal community to call home. With a population of 14,000 Canmore offers many city amenities while still maintaining rural charm. The Canmore hospital provides the Bow Valley with a variety of services including Acute Care, Long Term Care, Emergency, Labor and Delivery as well as hospital outpatient services and public health. The laboratory plays a key role in the interdisciplinary team within the hospital and community. As a member of the interdisciplinary team this position is responsible for working all shifts assigned within the rotation. Reporting directly to the on-site senior technologist and the Regional Rural Supervisor, the MLA will be responsible for providing exemplary patient care by applying the regional policies and procedures. The scope of practice is a continuum ranging from basic to highly complex procedures and activities within the laboratory department. In accordance with Health Information Act (HIA), Freedom of Information and Privacy (FOIP) and other privacy legislation in effect the incumbent shall comply at all times with APL / AHS’s Information Privacy and Information Security policies.

You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Recent training or experience related to clinical laboratory required. Good organizational skills and ability to assume responsibility. Proven ability to work within a computer-based environment. Must be able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with patients/clients, families, staff, interdisciplinary team members and personnel from other departments in a fast pace changing environment. Ability to work independently when necessary. Proven ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills Ability to facilitate change positively by encouraging others and accepting change within the workplace. Demonstrate a customer service attitude and delivery of excellent customer service by effectively meeting customer (internal and external) client needs by means of building productive and respectful customer relations and taking responsibility for customer satisfaction. Demonstrated personal leadership, regardless of role, by leading themselves through change, building positive, respectful and collaborative working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year phlebotomy experience, including neonates preferred.
