Job summary

Southcoast Health is seeking a Laboratory Assistant - Histology for St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, MA. This day shift (7:30am - 4:00pm), 40 hours per week position involves pre-analytical lab duties and specimen handling, under supervision.

Required: high school diploma or equivalent; phlebotomy/medical assistant certification preferred; up to 1 year experience. Vaccination against influenza and COVID-19 or approved exemption is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Certification in Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Up to 1 year experience.
• Combination of education and lab experience accepted.
• Must be fully vaccinated against seasonal influenza and COVID-19 or eligible for exemption with signed statement.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic pre-analytical technical and clerical duties including specimen receipt, specimen integrity, specimen processing, hazardous waste disposal, stain filtration and set up for fresh/froze section reagents, and instrument cleaning.

Hours: 40hrs

Shift: Day shift, 7:30am - 4:00pm

Location: St. Luke's Hospital - New Bedford, MA

**Available to regular status employees who are scheduled to work a minimum of 24 hours.

Under the direction of the department Clinical Specialist and Pathologists and in coordination with Medical and Administrative Director and Laboratory Managers, perform basic pre-analytical technical and clerical duties including but not limited to: specimen receipt, specimen integrity acceptability, specimen processing, assist with basic hazardous chemical waste disposal, stain filtration and set up for fresh froze section reagents, and cleaning of instruments.

• Successful completion of High School or equivalency required.
• Certification in Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Up to and including one year experience.
• Combination of education and experience as a microbiology specimen processor/lab assistant equivalent for at least 6 months accepted.
• Certification in Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant preferred.
• Must be fully vaccinated against seasonal Influenza and the COVID 19 virus or to be exempt from the requirement for medical or personal reasons by signing a statement certifying you are choosing to be exempt from vaccination once hired

Compensation: Pay rate will be determined based on level of experience.
