Under the direction of the Technical Specialist and Manager, perform specimen processing functions and non-technical duties as assigned. Works in various areas of the laboratory, registering patients, collecting samples, and assessing the acceptability of samples for testing. Testing includes centrifugation, aliquoting, storage, and shipping. Provides support for clinical testing including preparation of slides, loading instrument, and result reporting. Performs waived and point-of-care testing and phlebotomy.The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:
Performs phlebotomy tasks when applicable at job site
Accurately receives and logs in specimens
Performs processing tasks accurately and efficiently from the receipt of the specimen until delivered to the designated area for analysis, meeting established turnaround times
Processes, prepares lists and packages send out specimens
Communicates with other departments effectively
Performs clerical duties efficiently
Performs set-up and misc. micro duties when applicable at job site.
Performs loading and misc. core lab duties
Performs maintenance tasks on automated line as required, where applicable
Performs and documents Quality Control checks and maintenance
Follows established laboratory and hospital policies, for standard precautions, safety and disposal
Helps in the training and orientation of new employees under the direction of the Technical Specialist or Manager
Other duties as assigned
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
High school diploma or GED required
Knowledge of medical terminology and computer background preferred
1 year of full-time specimen processing, phlebotomy or equivalent experience preferred
Possess skills for accepting responsibility, making decisions, and working as a team
Promote and maintain compatible working relationships among personnel within the section
Ability to operate equipment at sitting or standing levels
Flexibility and adaptability to work additional hours or shifts and under stress
Effective communications skills to include listening, writing, talking and reading
Ability to communicate via telephone, LIS, email and verbally
Excellent customer service skills
Knowledge of laboratory functions, specimen requirements and specimen processing
Lift up to 25 pounds
Bending, squatting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling
Visual acuity, able to discern colors and above average manual dexterity
Moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and lifting
Subject to viral and bacterial infections, exposed to blood borne pathogens
Occasional exposure to toxic substances
Handles multiple priorities
Independent decision making and able to make decisions under pressure
Manages stress, anger, fear and hostility
Works alone and with others effectively
Works in close proximity to others or in a distracting environment
