Job summary

Hudson Valley Community College in Upstate New York seeks a Laboratory Assistant for the Applied Technologies – ECM area to help construct, assemble, and maintain ECM laboratory equipment while supporting student services in the department.

This full-time, 40-hour weekly position offers an hourly rate of $25.90, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities to work with a dedicated team in a dynamic lab environment.

Qualifications

• Graduation from High School or GED and two years of full-time paid experience in a scientific/technical laboratory or related skilled occupation; or an Associate’s Degree in the indicated field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Responsibilities

• Constructs, assembles, and maintains ECM laboratory equipment.
• Orders, maintains, and controls inventory of laboratory supplies including refrigerants, equipment, supplies, and tools.
• Issues lab equipment and supplies to students and assists in student services performed by the Applied Technologies Department.
• Maintains the cleanliness of laboratories, storage areas, and equipment.
• Prepares and maintains records and reports for the department’s equipment and furnishings inventory.
• Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs to laboratory equipment.
• Works with Lab Assistant colleagues to ensure programs are supplied and maintained.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least FOUR months immediately preceding the date of the test. Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law, preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality to which the appointment is to be made for at least FOUR months preceding the date of the written test.

This is a provisional appointment. Selected candidate will need to sit, pass and be eligible on the next available Rensselaer County Civil Service Exam for Laboratory Technician to be considered for permanent appointment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from High School or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of full time paid experience working in a particular kind of scientific or technical laboratory or performing skilled services in the particular technical occupation or trade associated with the specific title: or graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in the scientific or technical field indicated in the title; or an equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated above.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Constructs, assembles, and maintains ECM laboratory equipment.
• Orders, maintains, and controls inventory of laboratory supplies to include refrigerants, equipment, supplies, and tools.
• Issues lab equipment and supplies to students and assists in student services performed by the Applied Technologies Department.
• Maintains the cleanliness of laboratories, storage areas, and equipment.
• Prepares and maintains a variety of related records and reports to include the Applied Technologies Department’s inventory of equipment and furnishings.
• Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs to laboratory equipment.
• Performs related tasks as required.
• Works with Lab Assistant colleagues in the Applied Technologies Department to ensure all programs are supplied and maintained.

This is a full-time 12-month, 40-hour work week position with an hourly rate of $25.90. Start date is immediate.
