Job Description

Lab Accessioner/Processor from 6:30 pm to 3:00 am, Monday through Friday. The Accessioner/Processor will be responsible for specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and data entry in a fast-paced environment according to laboratory standard operating procedures. They ensure the integrity of laboratory specimens and accurate data entry, facilitating a smooth workflow within the laboratory for timely accessioning and forwarding cases to the appropriate section for testing. Additionally, the Accessioner/Processor performs duties as assigned by the Cytology Supervisor, AP Manager, or Medical Director.

Duties of a Lab Accessioner/Processor:
  1. Receiving, sorting, and handling gynecologic specimens.
  2. Unpack and route specimens to their respective laboratory sections.
  3. Ensure all patient specimens match requisitions and comply with CAP and CLIA guidelines.
  4. Proper storage and testing of all specimens.
  5. Data entry – accurately input patient information and procedure names into the LIS system; print labels when necessary.
  6. Process cytology specimens in compliance with CLIA and CAP guidelines.
  7. Follow quality control guidelines to maintain specimen integrity and data accuracy.
  8. Follow lab safety practices when working with hazardous materials.
  9. Work efficiently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment, maintaining quality standards set by the Laboratory Medical Director.
  10. Document discrepancies during receipt, such as mismatched patient names or incorrect requisitions.
  11. Generate and organize mid-day and closing lists for special testing specimens.
  12. File cytology slides after final review.
  13. Handle and dispose of medical and chemical waste according to safety policies.
  14. Comply with environmental health and safety policies and procedures.
