Job summary

CommonSpirit Health's St. Luke’s Health – Memorial Lufkin in Texas is seeking a Lab Assistant to support diagnostic workflows by accurately collecting, preparing, and processing patient specimens for tests.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required at hire.
• CPR (Basic Life Support) certification required or within 90 days.
• Phlebotomy or Lab Assistant program certificate preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced lab.

Responsibilities

• Collect, prepare, and process patient specimens for diagnostic tests.
• Ensure positive patient identification and maintain safety protocols.
• Support department workflow and teamwork to maintain efficiency.
• Move samples promptly to appropriate laboratory departments for testing.
• Handle specimen send-out testing and prepare packaging for external labs.
• Exercise good judgment and seek help when needed.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Lab Assistant, you will play a crucial role in solving diagnostic mysteries, bringing us one step closer to effectively treating patient illnesses and injuries.

Every day you will utilize your expertise and our advanced technology to precisely collect, prepare, and process a diverse range of patient specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) for various diagnostic tests.

To be successful in this role, you will possess a foundational understanding of laboratory procedures, demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, and maintain an eager commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

• Practices positive patient identification at all times, in all job functions.
• Practices HumanKindness and courtesy with all patient and co-worker interactions. Establishes and maintains good communication within the department and with other hospital departments.
• Takes responsibility for the department workflow, assists all members of the team to maintain department workflow and efficiency. Creates an atmosphere by manner, work and deed that fosters teamwork and collaboration.
• Processes specimen into the lab, organized for department distribution. Moves processed samples quickly to laboratory departments for testing.
• Handles Laboratory Send-out testing. Processes, organizes, packing lists and packaging for testing sent to external laboratories according to procedures.
• Uses good judgment when problem solving and requests help when needed.
