Responsibilities

As a lab assistant with CommonSpirit Health, you will assist with a variety of procedures, including receiving and preparing tests, as well as performing some testing as permitted. Some of what you’ll do:
- Practice positive patient identification at all times, in all job functions.
- Practice kindness and courtesy with all patient and co-worker interactions, maintaining good communication within the department and throughout the hospital.
- Take responsibility for the department workflow and assist team members to maintain efficiency, fostering teamwork and collaboration.
- Process specimens into the lab, organize for department distribution, and move samples quickly for testing.
- Perform laboratory testing following written policies and procedures, as allowed.
- Evaluate and release test results under the supervision of a Clinical Lab Scientist, considering quality control results, instrument performance, specimen integrity, and prior patient results.
- Handle send-out testing, processing, and organize packing lists and packaging for external laboratory testing.
- Use good judgment in problem-solving and seek help when needed.
- Perform phlebotomy, following blood collection procedures and techniques to obtain samples that meet quality and quantity requirements.
- Assist with phlebotomy training under supervisor or coordinator guidance.
- Perform routine maintenance on lab equipment and maintain records as trained.
- Monitor department supply inventory, assist with stocking, and complete reagent logs.
Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED
- BLS-CPR certification within 90 days of hire
- Excellent customer service and time management skills
Preferred:
- 6 months of experience in an acute care facility
- Lab Assistant and/or Phlebotomy certification
