Position Summary

The University of Georgia animal care and use program is looking for a talented veterinarian to join our collegial team in support of the University’s growing animal care and use program, including the high quality AAALAC-accredited program.

Specifically, we are seeking applications to engage a full-time non-tenure clinical track faculty veterinarian in the Office of Research with an appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine to provide regulatory service for the animal care and use program and to participate in instructional and scholarly activities. This veterinarian will serve as Associate Director in the Office of Animal Care and Use.

Reporting to the Director of OACU, the duties of the Associate Director include participating in oversight of compliance with applicable policy, guidelines, and laws; supporting the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); and consulting with faculty on the development of research projects.

Additional Requirements

Board eligibility or certification in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or related discipline.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
  • History with animal research laws and regulations and AAALAC International standards.
  • History of working with a variety of animals, such as rodents, rabbits, ferrets, cats, dogs, farm animals, nonhuman primates, reptiles, and fish.
  • Supervisory background including directing employee activities and priorities and providing guidance and performance feedback.
  • Enrollment and participation in the Occupational Health and Safety Program and maintenance of all required vaccinations or other required prophylaxis based on research being conducted at all facilities.
  • Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA).
Physical Demands
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Ability to squat, kneel, reach overhead, walk stairs, walk through animal facilities and farms during IACUC inspections.
  • Must be able to work in an enclosed environment exposed to smells, dust, and dander of animals.
  • Ability to perform above while wearing Personal Protective Equipment, such as combination of Tyvek jumpsuits, face shield, exam gloves, and fitted respirator or Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR).
Duties/Responsibilities
Service
  • Support IACUC functions by conducting the veterinary review of animal research projects (IACUC protocols); attending IACUC meetings; participating with IACUC and USDA inspections and AAALAC, International site visits; and investigating reported adverse events, unexpected outcomes, possible non-compliances, and concerns related to animal research.
  • Participate in other activities and projects to meet OACU goals and mission such as managing a post-approval monitoring program; quality assurance and improvement; drafting and updating institutional policies, guidelines, and SOPs; and outreach communication with the research community.
Administrative
  • Supervise four OACU staff members.
  • Assist with routine OACU documents, such as annual reports for regulatory agencies and the AAALAC, International program description.
  • Assist with other OACU administrative duties as assigned.
Scholarly Activity
  • Perform collaborative research and other academic responsibilities.
  • Make scholarly contributions as a co-author.
Instruction
  • Mentor veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students.
  • Instruct veterinary, graduate, and/or undergraduate students.
