Position Purpose

The Laboratory Animal Technicians in the Center for Comparative Medicine and Research (CCMR) provide specific care to laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner in accordance with clearly defined direction and established federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines and policies on the use of laboratory animals in biomedical research. The role supports research investigations and is a developmental position involving intensive training, with the possibility of promotion after competency is achieved.

Responsibilities
  • Animal Care – 40%: Handles and cares for animals daily, observes and maintains an awareness of their physical needs, reports changes in condition to veterinary staff, communicates with principal investigators and technical staff, achieves competence in caring for a variety of species housed in the Animal Resource Center, may administer medications under the direction of a veterinarian, and may euthanize animals as needed.
  • Facility/Habitat Maintenance – 40%: Cleans cages using washers or other mechanical equipment, prepares caging and equipment for animal care, maintains the sanitary condition of animals and their environment, decontaminates areas as needed, prepares chemicals and appropriate dilutions, performs light maintenance such as replacing bulbs and servicing washers, empties waste baskets and cleans floors, and maintains equipment maintenance logs.
  • Environmental Control – 15%: Observes and records conditions of an animal’s environment, including temperature, air exchange, and light cycle, and applies an understanding of the problems created by lacking environmental factors in an animal population.
  • Administrative – 5%: Maintains proper medical records and inventory records for individual animals, documents necessary records such as departmental time logs, animal husbandry logs, clinical incident forms, and room supply inventory sheets, receives and properly stores feed and bedding, ensures appropriate rotation and inventory, and participates in in‑house training programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • No previous experience required.
  • Capacity to safely and efficiently lift and transport equipment or feed packages up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to work weekend and holiday schedules.
