Baylor College of Medicine’s Center for Comparative Medicine seeks an entry‑level animal technician to support the care and handling of laboratory animals. The role involves routine feeding, cage changes, health checks and meticulous recordkeeping in a safe, sanitary environment.

Under supervision, the candidate will assist with animal intake, transfers, and AAALAC‑compliant practices, including identification, breeding setup, and basic procurement tasks, while maintaining clear documentation.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

Responsibilities

  • Feeds and waters animals.
  • Changes animal caging as scheduled, sanitizing rooms, equipment and hallways.
  • Conducts daily animal health checks.
  • Receives animals into and transfers animals out of facility, and maintains detailed accurate records.
  • Ensures that activities are in compliance with AAALAC standards.
  • Applies permanent identification devices, collects tissue biopsies.
  • Establishes breeding cages and weans juveniles.
  • Receives, processes and fulfills internal purchase order requests.
  • Detailed record keeping and log documentation.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.

Education

High School diploma or GED
One year of relevant experience
