Job summary

Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan is seeking a Labor Relations Specialist to assist with labor relations including contract administration for faculty and staff. You will support the Manager, Labor Relations and help administer six labor agreements while delivering excellent customer service to employees.

The position requires interpreting contract language, knowledge of NLRA and FLSA, and the ability to work collaboratively with Human Resources and other college teams.

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years as HR Generalist, Labor Relations Specialist, or similar with direct union interaction.
  • At least two years interpreting and administering contract language.
  • Strong knowledge of NLRA and FLSA employment laws.
  • Ability to learn new knowledge to improve operational effectiveness.

Role Summary: This position is responsible for assisting with labor relations including contract administration for faculty and staff. Serves as specialist to the Manager, Labor Relations in the administration of 6 labor agreements, including: Faculty; Supervisory and Managerial; ProTech; Administrative Support; Maintenance and Operational; and Public Safety Officers. The Labor Relations Specialist is also responsible for creating a positive impression of Human Resources and Mott Community College by providing excellent customer service and resolving routine matters presented by customers. The Labor Relations Specialist works collaboratively with other members of Human Resources to appropriately serve the College’s employees.

Supervisory Responsibility

The Labor Relations Specialist may occasionally share supervision of work study students and/or temporary employees for specific projects.

  • Minimum of two years of experience as a Human Resources Generalist, Labor Relations Specialist, or in a comparable role with direct union interaction.
  • At least two years of experience interpreting and administering contract language.
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws, particularly the National Labor Relations Act ( NLRA ) and the Fair Labor Standards Act ( FLSA ).
  • Ability to acquire and synthesize new knowledge that translates to improved operational effectiveness and competencies that support the position’s necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
  • Additional experience beyond the minimum requirements.
  • Certificate in Labor Relations.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • The person in this position needs to move about both inside the office and at other locations where interviews and meetings are conducted.
  • Frequently operates a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Frequently communicates with others over the phone and in person; must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Ability to speak clearly and communicate proficiently in English.
Work Schedule

Full-time; 52 weeks per year. In addition to regular business hours, the person in this position must be able to be flexible around the needs of the College, which includes occasional evening and/or weekend hours.
