Job Summary

UCSF is seeking an experienced Labor & Employee Relations Consultant to join our team. This is a senior-level role responsible for advising all levels of the organization on complex and high-impact labor and employee relations matters across the organization.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide strategic labor and employee relations counsel to leaders at all levels
  • Independently manage highly complex and sensitive ER cases, assessing risk and recommending solutions
  • Interpret and administer collective bargaining agreements and University policies
  • Investigate and respond to grievances and complaints
  • Design and deliver training to managers on labor relations, performance management, and workplace best practices
  • Promote proactive employee relations strategies that reduce organizational risk
  • Serve as a lead resource and subject matter expert within the department

This role operates with significant independence and requires sound judgment in high-visibility and high-risk situations.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a seasoned LER professional who brings:

  • Demonstrated expertise in labor and employee relations within a unionized environment
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex disciplinary, performance management, attendance, and other labor & employee relations matters from intake through resolution
  • Strong analytical and risk assessment skills
  • The ability to influence and advise senior leadership with credibility and confidence
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced high volume environment
  • A collaborative, relationship-driven approach across diverse stakeholder groups

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement will follow the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $165,000 - $190,000 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and six years of experience in labor and employee relations or equivalent
  • Advanced knowledge of labor/employment law and principles of labor negotiations
  • Advanced knowledge of advocacy principles to represent organization in complex dispute forums
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and court decisions regarding employment matters
  • Specialized knowledge within labor relations field
  • Ability to bargain and represent organization’s interests effectively
  • Leadership and mentoring skills for other labor relations professionals
  • Advanced analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations
  • Ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, and understanding how work impacts other HR and organizational areas
  • Experience in public sector, higher education
