Job description

Job Description

Position Summary

The Rewind Operator is the last set of eyes on a label before it ships. Working at a rewind table, the operator inspects finished label rolls, splices out defects, breaks master rolls down into the roll counts and configurations the customer ordered, applies the correct core tags, and closes out the job ticket. The role is equal parts machine operation and quality inspection — accuracy at this station protects the entire job that came before it.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Machine Operation

  • Power the rewind table on and off and confirm it is in a safe operating condition
  • Set the press count for the job and verify counts against the job ticket
  • Operate air expanders to load and unload core shafts
  • Start and stop rolls under control, maintaining consistent tension and edge alignment
  • Complete clean splices that meet quality standards for appearance and holding strength
  • Maintain correct wind direction, unwind position, and roll diameter per the job specification

Quality and Inspection

  • Inspect labels in-line for print defects, registration issues, die strike problems, color variation, and material flaws
  • Remove defective labels and splice, documenting waste as required
  • Verify label copy, part numbers, and quantities against the job ticket and approved sample before releasing a roll
  • Confirm each roll carries the core tag matching the design actually on that roll — tag-to-design accuracy is a critical control point for this position
  • Follow all applicable work instructions and quality checklists, including additional controls that apply to medical device and blood tube label jobs
  • Record material and traceability information as required by the traceability system

Job Administration

  • Look up job ticket numbers in the CRM and print core tags for each design on the job
  • Label, package, and stage finished rolls for shipping
  • Finish and close out the job ticket accurately and completely
  • Communicate defects, material problems, or count discrepancies to the department lead promptly rather than working around them

General

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Follow all safety rules, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE requirements
  • Assist with other production or finishing tasks as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to read and interpret job tickets, work instructions, and specifications
  • Basic math skills for counts, footage, and roll calculations
  • Color vision and close visual acuity sufficient to detect print and material defects
  • Reliable attendance and willingness to work mandatory overtime

Preferred

  • Prior experience in label converting, printing, packaging, or another manufacturing finishing operation
  • Familiarity with pressure-sensitive materials and roll handling
  • Experience working under a documented quality system

Competency Certification

New Rewind Operators complete a department certification sign-off verifying they can independently perform the following, and that they have read and understood the related documents:

  1. Turn the rewind table on and off
  2. Set the press count
  3. Turn air expanders on and off
  4. Start a roll
  5. Stop a roll
  6. Complete a splice
  7. Finish a ticket

Certification is signed by the operator and the department lead.

Physical Requirements

  • Lots of sitting
  • Repetitive hand and arm motion, including reaching, grasping, and fine manipulation
  • Lifting and carrying rolls, cores, and cartons up to 50 lbs; occasional team lifts above that
  • Bending, twisting, and reaching to load and unload shafts
  • Working near moving machinery in a production environment with typical noise levels

Schedule and Terms

  • Shifts are available 5x 8-hour, 4x10-hour days, or 3x 12hour days depending on department needs
  • Overtime is mandatory
  • Two paid 15-minute breaks per shift plus an optional unpaid one-hour lunch
