Job summary

University of Kansas Medical Center is seeking an EHS Specialist to support the Environment Health and Safety department. The role involves handling hazardous, radioactive, and biological waste, conducting inspections, and ensuring regulatory compliance across laboratories.

You will assist with inventory updates, training program development, and coordination of shipments, while contributing to a safe, compliant research environment.

Qualifications

• Four (4) years of hazardous materials experience.
• Education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Experience with radiation safety, emergency response, Safety Committees.

Responsibilities

• Collect and process chemical, radioactive, and biological waste from research laboratories, including handling 55-gallon containers up to 300 lb.
• Conduct weekly inspections and track decay-in-storage radioactive waste; coordinate with contractors for disposal.
• Survey laboratories for compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations; assess risk and analyze contamination wipes.
• Assist with updating radiation and chemical inventories in tracking software; coordinate shipments of Hazardous Materials.
• Support development and coordination of EHS training programs and policy development; participate in committees and training requirements.
