Job Description

The Laboratory Technician’s role is technical. The technician must have a working knowledge of chemistry, statistics, and mathematics, including 12 hours of college chemistry. Familiarity with laboratory equipment operation and maintenance is required.

The technician must also be knowledgeable about OSHA, EPA, and DEQ regulations related to laboratory safety and waste management. Some understanding of plant processes and sample recognition is necessary.

Certification by the state of Louisiana as a First Responder, along with continuing education and emergency response training, is required.

Technicians are encouraged to pursue ongoing education and training in best practices.

Accountabilities

• Prioritize safety, recognize hazards, wear PPE, and participate in safety meetings.
• Adhere to ISO 9000 standards.
• Analyze samples using accepted methods promptly and accurately.
• Maintain proficiency through training.
• Participate in emergency drills and respond appropriately.
• Communicate variances to relevant personnel.
• Ensure timely shift relief and maintain a clean workspace.
• Propose solutions to improve safety and efficiency.
• Utilize databases and systems for continuous improvement.
• Follow proper waste segregation and disposal procedures.
• Collaborate effectively with team members.

Physical Requirements

• Work 12-hour rotating shifts.
• Perform visual and fine-motor tasks.
• Stand or walk for extended periods.
• Lift up to 25 pounds regularly, occasionally handle 55-gallon drums, and climb stairs as needed.
• Operate a forklift occasionally.
• Distinguish color differences, especially in titrations.
