Job description

Summary

The Laboratory Technician has primary responsibility for performing tasks which support the toxicology testing on bloods, urines and other specimens using instrumental and manual methods established by the laboratory.

Essential Job Functions

  • Always be alert and aware to ensure safety, accuracy and efficiency.
  • Perform manual and automated tasks to support testing of biological samples including urine, blood, vitreous fluid and other tissues.
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, slides and other necessary services to perform laboratory procedures.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and cleanliness
  • Documents procedures appropriately.
  • Report problems to supervisors
  • Ensure inventory levels are sufficient and appropriate; this includes ordering supplies to ensure there is no shortage and verifying expiry dates.
  • Following proper laboratory safety procedures.
  • Maintaining required electronic and hardcopy departmental records.
  • Complies with laboratory safety protocol and practices universal precautions.
  • Performing other miscellaneous duties as assigned by department supervisor or director.

Required Education/Experience

  • Associates or Bachelor of Science in Biology, Laboratory Science, Biochemistry or related field.
  • Strong communications skills - written, verbal, and listening.
  • Dependable with a strong work ethic, initiative, flexibility and innovative thinking.
  • Accuracy with exceptional attention to detail.
