Job summary

UAB Medicine in Birmingham, AL is seeking a Laboratory Technician to support the fast-paced generalist lab at UAB Hospital-Highlands. You will handle preparation, distribution, cataloging, and storage of specimens, while following quality controls and LIS usage.

You’ll respond to client calls and assist with administrative tasks to keep laboratory operations running smoothly. Ideal candidates have a high school diploma and at least one year of experience; BLS may be required or obtained within

The laboratory at UAB Hospital-Highlands is a fast-paced, generalist laboratory environment supporting inpatient, outpatient, ER, and surgical services. You’ll have the opportunity to rotate through a variety of disciplines, including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, immunology, blood bank, and molecular testing. You’ll work in a collaborative, team-focused setting that provides broad clinical exposure and strong technical development. This role is a great fit if you want variety and hands-on experience.

Job Description

To perform all duties related to the preparation, distribution, cataloging, and storage of lab specimens for testing. To adhere to departmental specimen identification policies and quality controls. To utilize lab and hospital information systems and provide general administrative support to the laboratory staff in support of laboratory operations, such as filing, record maintenance, responding to client calls, and mail delivery. To serve as a technical resource to others. To orient new employees as needed.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year experience required. Depending on the unit/department or if the position works directly with patients, certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required or required to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
