UAB Medicine in Birmingham, AL is seeking a generalist medical laboratory scientist to support chemistry, hematology, and coagulation testing during evening and night shifts, delivering accurate results for inpatient, emergency, and critical care services.

Pay range: $27.85 - $45.25 / hour
Our core laboratory team provides evening and night shift coverage, and they play a vital role in delivering accurate, timely results for inpatient, emergency, and critical care services around the clock. In this expanded generalist role, you’ll support both chemistry, hematology, and coagulation testing, including general and special chemistry, hematology analysis, urinalysis, routine coagulation studies, peripheral smear review and cell identification, body fluid and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytospins, and urine sediment analysis. To perform, interpret, check accuracy and report results on routine and complex laboratory procedures on body tissues, fluids, and other substances according to laboratory procedure manuals. To evaluate new instruments and/or methods, assuring correct reagent preparation and quality control information, leading troubleshooting efforts and monitoring the performance of equipment maintenance. May perform apheresis and/or bone marrows or coordinate the education, computer operations, quality control/quality assurance duties, and assume the supervisory function within a section as requested.
Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory or a related field and one (1) year of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently credentialed as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) OR currently certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) required. Additional credentials may be recognized for the Blood Bank, Molecular and Microbiology departments. Depending on the unit/department or if the position works directly with patients, Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required or required to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
