Job summary

Santee Cooper in Moncks Corner, SC, seeks a Lab Technician to perform sample collection, preparation, and reporting to support SCDES permits and certifications. You will work in a team with limited supervision and communicate effectively to ensure data quality.

Qualifications

• Lab Technician A requires a BA/BS in biology, chemistry or related field with 1 year experience, or an Associate with 2 years, or HS diploma with 5 years.
• Lab Technician B requires a BA/BS or an Associate with 1 year or HS diploma with 2 years.
• Lab Technician C requires a HS diploma/GED.

Responsibilities

• Process samples from Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion drinking water facilities.
• Collect, prepare, and coordinate lab analyses with external labs.
• Calibrate instrumentation, review data, and maintain compliance paperwork.
• Prepare compliance reports and ensure timely submittals.
• Maintain inventory and handle procurement for lab supplies.
• Coordinate waste handling and environmental management tasks.

Position Description

Must be able to operate within analytic/scientific method or standard operating procedures required by Safe Drinking Water and Clean Water Acts. Must apply experience and skills to calibrate equipment, collect samples and generate reports required for drinking water permits and laboratory certification from South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES). Expected to work in a team environment with limited degree of supervision and to communicate effectively and professionally.

• Responsible for processing samples from the Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion drinking water treatment facilities.
• This includes sample collection, sample preparation, and coordination with laboratories for sample drop off and analysis.
• Samples to be collected include all NPDES regulatory samples, TOC/DOC/UV 254 samples for MOR/e-permitting reporting, and others as needed.
• Helps maintain regulatory compliance in the laboratories by preparing standards, calibrating laboratory instrumentation, operating and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, reviewing data, keeping paperwork up to date, and identifying and reporting any abnormalities to supervision.
• Completes check chemistry with an expectation of high performance as indicated by little to no errors.
• Ensures all standards are in compliance with expiration dates, that all QC for the equipment is completed on the required schedule, and that all the thermometers are calibrated.
• Maintains documentation for compliance audits and participates in lab certification audits.
• Prepares required compliance reports, such as the Monthly Operating Report.
• Submits reports for review before the required submittal date. Ensures all paper work used for reports is scanned into ECM after review.
• Responsible for billing at both water systems, including accuracy of meter reading, entering data on a regular basis, and generating the monthly billing report for review.
• Coordinates all required proficiency testing (PT) for both water systems.
• This includes ordering the PT studies, ensuring tests are analyzed within required time frame, reporting results and taking corrective action for any failed test.
• Maintains an inventory of laboratory chemicals and equipment.
• Coordinates purchasing activities for the laboratories for both water systems.
• Prepares requisitions for any chemicals when needed and coordinate with procurement and operations to ensure this is successfully completed.
• Maintains all the chemical delivery tickets and match them to every invoice for both plants.
• Coordinates environmental management functions including hazardous & non-hazardous Waste and recycling.
• This includes ensuring proper labeling and storage of all waste at both plants, entering waste containers into a tracking database, and organizing waste pick-ups with corporate waste manager.
• Will consider Lab Tech A, B or C

Lab Technician A Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or other related scientific field from an accredited university + 1 year experience, Associate's Degree in Natural or Technical Science + 2 years experience or High School Diploma/GED + 5 years experience required.

Lab Technician B Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or other related scientific field from an accredited university, Associate's Degree in Natural or Technical Science + 1 years experience or High School Diploma/GED + 2 years experience required.

Lab Technician C Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED required.
