Job summary

Blanchard Valley Health System seeks a temporary Laboratory Assistant to join the department for up to 12 weeks. You will follow SOPs for specimen handling, registration, accessioning, processing, staining, plating, labeling, and data entry into the LIS system.

You will support microbiology, cytology and pathology specimen workflows, maintain instrument logs, perform QC on culture media, and assist with clerical duties as needed. Strong communication and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Knowledge of computers, telephone operations and equipment maintenance.
• Knowledge of clinical or anatomical laboratory functions, medical terminology, or science background.
• Organized, able to prioritize, work in a fast-paced environment.
• Customer focused, service oriented and able to communicate effectively.
• Able to work independently as well as in a team.
• Ability to provide care appropriate to age of patient served.
• Positive service-oriented interpersonal skills required.

Responsibilities

• Duty 1: Practices effective communication skills and maintains a respectful, courteous attitude.
• Duty 2: Processes incoming specimen requisitions with demographic accuracy in LIS.
• Duty 3: Prepares reagents and stains, maintains quality control and inventory records.
• Duty 4: Performs culture prep, testing support, QC documentation, and instrument-related tasks under supervision.
• Duty 5: Completes mandatory trainings and demonstrates ongoing professional development.
• Duty 6: Ensures proper disposal of cultures and maintains department cleanliness.
• Duty 7: Plans daily workflow and prioritizes tasks for timely processing.
• Duty 8: Maintains punctuality and adherence to attendance policies.
• Duty 9: Reads memos and participates in staff meetings.
