Job summary

UF Health in Gainesville is seeking a Lab PAA/Phlebotomist to perform blood collection and specimen handling for laboratory analysis. You will process specimens, prepare slides, and ensure accurate preanalytical handling under hospital systems.

The role requires phlebotomy training or equivalent experience, CPR certification, and strong interpersonal skills to support patient care and teamwork within a teaching hospital environment.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires completion of phlebotomy training program or 6 months of recent phlebotomy experience (clinical or hospital based preferred).
  • In addition, one or more of the following is preferred: Graduation from a certified health-related program; AP science courses; college-level science studies.
  • GPA of 3.0 or above preferred.
  • Must have computer operational skills using a laboratory system or hospital information system.
  • Applicant should display initiative, multitask and take on responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to problem-solve and be a team member; excellent interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and advanced venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures.
  • Collect, prepare, process, and store human biological specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Perform routine laboratory procedures related to microbiological, hematological, immunohematological, and chemical testing.
  • Release and place laboratory orders using hospital and laboratory computer systems.
  • Receive, process, and distribute patient specimens and blood products.
  • Perform preanalytical laboratory functions, including loading specimens onto analyzers.
  • Prepare slides for staining and microscopic examination.
  • Prepare and package specimens for transportation to outside laboratories.
  • Follow established laboratory procedures and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

In this role the Lab PAA/Phlebotomist will perform the following duties:

  • Perform routine and advanced venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures.

  • Perform routine laboratory procedures related to microbiological, hematological, immunohematological, and chemical testing.
  • Release and place laboratory orders using hospital and laboratory computer systems.
  • Receive, process, and distribute patient specimens and blood products.
  • Perform preanalytical laboratory functions, including loading specimens onto analyzers.
  • Prepare slides for staining and microscopic examination.
  • Prepare and package specimens for transportation to outside or reference laboratories.
  • Follow established laboratory procedures and safety protocols to ensure accurate specimen handling and processing.

FTE: 1.0

Hours: Variable

Days: Monday-Friday

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Requires completion of phlebotomy training program or 6 months of recent phlebotomy experience (clinical or hospital based preferred).
  • In addition, one or more of the following is preferred:
    • Graduation from a certified health-related program at high school level or above; OR
    • Successful completion of Advanced Placement courses in the sciences at the high school level; OR
    • Successful completion of science based studies at college level (minimum 3 credit hours).
  • Prefer GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Must have computer operational skills using a personal computer, laboratory system or other hospital information system.
  • Applicant should display initiative, have the ability to multitask and be able to take on responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to problem-solve and be a team member is essential.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current CPR certification is required.

Motor Vehicle Operator Designation:Not provided.
