Job summary

UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL is seeking a part-time phlebotomist to join our team. You will perform routine and advanced venipuncture and collect specimens from pediatric to adult patients, under supervision.

You will enter orders in LIS/HIS, prepare samples for testing, and help ensure accurate billing codes, while maintaining quality and safety standards. Strong interpersonal and computer skills are required; training provided.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Completion of phlebotomy training program or 6 months of recent phlebotomy experience.
• GPA of 3.0 or above preferred; computer skills and ability to multitask; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and specimen collection on infant, pediatric and adult patients.
• Receive specimens and enter orders in LIS/HIS; ensure proper billing with signatures and accurate codes.
• Prepare biological samples for testing (microbiology, hematology, immunology, chemistry).
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
• Provide information and assistance to health-care providers, patients, family, and coworkers.
• Support cost-saving ideas and adapt workflow to activity levels.
• Daily tasks adjust to periods of increased/decreased activity.

Performs routine and advanced venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures. Under direct supervision, performs routine laboratory analytical procedures related to preparing and storing human biological samples, blood and body fluids, for microbiological, hematological, immunohematological and chemical analysis. Releases and/or places orders in hospital and laboratory computer systems, receives, processes and distributes specimens and/or blood products. Performs various preanalytical functions including loading samples onto analyzers, preparing slides for staining and preparing samples for transport to other laboratories.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine and advanced venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures on infant, pediatric and adult patients.
• Receives specimens, places orders in LIS/HIS, accessions, sorts specimens and distributes to designated areas. Insures written orders are complete in order to meet federal compliance requirements for proper billing, including authorized signatures and accurate diagnosis codes.
• Performs various functions to prepare samples for testing. Processes and prepares biological samples, blood and body fluids, for microbiology, hematology, immunology and chemical analysis.
• Operates and maintains equipment.
• Provides laboratory related information and assistance to health-care providers, patients, family, and co-workers.
• Demonstrates a concern for financial strength and fiscal responsibility by supporting cost-saving ideas.
• Daily tasks are integrated into workflow adjusting for periods of increased and decreased activity.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

• High School graduate or equivalent
• Requires completion of phlebotomy training program or 6 months of recent phlebotomy experience (clinical or hospital based preferred).
• In addition, one or more of the following is preferred:
  • Graduation from a certified health-related program at high school level or above; OR
  • Successful completion of Advanced Placement courses in the sciences at the high school level; OR
  • Successful completion of science based studies at college level (minimum 3 credit hours).
• Prefer GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Must have computer operational skills using a personal computer, laboratory system or other hospital information system.
• Applicant should display initiative, have the ability to multitask and be able to take on responsibilities.
• Proven ability to problem-solve and be a team member is essential.
• Must have excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.
