Job summary

United Concrete in Wallingford, CT is seeking a Lab Manager to own the QC documentation system and ensure audit-ready records, including DOT, PCI and NPCA programs. The role is 80% documentation/compliance and 20% lab testing.

You will manage NCR/RFI logs, review test records, coordinate audits, and support lab testing with hands-on duties as needed, requiring 5+ years in QA/QC and strong ASTM methods knowledge.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of QA/QC experience in precast concrete, construction materials, or related manufacturing.
• Experience managing QC documentation for DOT or transportation agency review.
• Experience facilitating DOT, PCI, and/or NPCA audits.
• ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician Grade I (or ability to obtain within 3 months).
• Strong knowledge of concrete materials, ASTM/AASHTO test methods, and precast inspection tolerances.
• Ability to read blueprints and shop drawings.
• Strong Microsoft Office skills (especially Excel) and quality documentation software.
• Exceptional organization, attention to detail, and written communication.
• High school diploma required; technical or 4-year degree preferred.
• NPCA/PCI Level I/II or DOT QC Inspector certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Own the plant’s QC documentation system and keep records complete, accurate, and audit-ready.
• Review and approve technician test records and inspection reports against specifications and shop drawings.
• Maintain records for raw materials, mill certs, equipment calibrations, and test results.
• Manage NCR, RFI, and site inspection logs through documentation, tracking, and closure (with corrective actions).
• Prepare and submit documentation packages to DOT and other transportation agencies.
• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly QC reports with clear, accurate data summaries.
• Serve as primary contact for DOT inspections and support PCI and NPCA plant certification audits.
• Plan and execute internal audits; track corrective actions to closure and verify effectiveness.
• Analyze test/inspection trends; lead root cause investigations and corrective actions.
• Coordinate with production/quality teams to ensure compliance documentation is completed on time and without gaps.

United Concrete, a 70-year leader in precast concrete serving New England, is hiring a Lab Manager (QC Documentation & Testing Compliance) in Wallingford, CT to own our QC program, documentation, and DOT/PCI/NPCA compliance.

This is a primarily office-based role (approx. 80% documentation/compliance / 20% plant floor) focused on QC record ownership, audit readiness, data review, and process improvement, with hands-on involvement in lab testing as needed.

What You’ll Do

QC Documentation & Compliance (80%)

• Own the plant’s QC documentation system and keep records complete, accurate, and audit-ready.
• Review and approve technician test records and inspection reports against specifications and shop drawings.
• Maintain records for raw materials, mill certs, equipment calibrations, and test results.

Lab / Testing Support (20%)

• Conduct lab testing and/or direct/verify testing activities as needed, including:
  • Cylinder breaks
  • ASR testing
  • Coulomb testing
  • Resistivity testing
  • Support 2-3 trial mix designs per week (as required) with documentation and reporting
• Conduct regular plant floor walkthroughs to verify procedures and spot-check testing and inspections.
• Support daily coordination of QC technician assignments and provide training on documentation requirements and procedural updates.
